Good day community

This adventure started with a conversation I had with some friends who told me about these spectacular ponds between the cities of Ourense and Vigo. First I informed myself well about what I would need and what shoes to wear since I would need to walk along sandy paths and areas of rocks or water. The ponds are located in an area with a steep slope forming stairs and this makes access to some of them difficult. I left the city of Ourense on the A-52 motorway and left the area on the N-120 national road that would take me directly to the town of Melón and from there to the exit to the ponds area. Upon reaching the specific point where to start the expedition, a small dirt track and a not very large cleared area give me the opportunity to leave the car and begin the walk to the ponds.

Esta aventura parte de una conversación que tuve con unos amigos que me hablaron de estas espectaculares pozas entre las ciudades de Ourense y Vigo. Primero me informe bien de lo que necesitaría y de que ponerme de calzado ya que se precisaría para caminar por entre caminos de arena y zona de rocas o agua. Las Pozas están situadas en una zona de fuerte pendiente formando escaleras y esto dificulta en parte el acceso a algunas de ellas. Partí de la ciudad de Ourense por la autovía A-52 y salí en la zona por la carretera nacional N-120 que me llevaría directamente al pueblo de Melón y de allí a la salida a la zona de las pozas. Al llegar al punto concreto donde iniciar la expedición una pequeña pista de tierra y un área despejada no muy grande da pie a dejar el coche y comenzar la caminata hacia las pozas.

In this area, the small Cerves River winds its way through this mountainous area and, in its quest to find its destination, it creates waterfalls and pools of water that remain and go deeper into the landscape. The area has a thick grove like a green blanket and countless plant, tree and animal species roam freely in this beautiful ecosystem. I am surprised at how well-kept and clean the surroundings are and how little impact the constant visits to this wonderful natural landscape have had on this area.

En esta zona el pequeño rio Cerves recorre sinuosamente esta zona montañosa y en su empeño por buscar su destino va creando saltos y pozas de agua que se remansan y profundizan en el paisaje. La zona presenta una espesa arboleda como manto verde e innumerables especies vegetales, árboles y especies animales campan a sus anchas por este precioso ecosistema. Me sorprende lo bien cuidado y limpio que encuentro el entorno y el mínimo impacto que ha causado en esta zona las constantes visitas que se producen a este maravilloso paisaje natural.

It is at this point that I begin to explore the area along dirt roads, getting as close to the banks as possible. The intention was to go upstream and locate as many small and large ponds as possible to make a small inventory and also a visit. The landscape devoured me with its thick vegetation, ferns, water plants and the grove of pines, oaks and chestnuts that gave it that peculiar characteristic of the lands of the interior of Galicia and its flora and fauna. The ponds appeared before my eyes and I noticed the transparency of their waters and their depth, I calculated that some would be between 3 and 4 meters deep in their most eroded areas.

Es en este punto donde empiezo a recorrer la zona por los caminos de tierra acercándome a las orillas lo máximo posible. La intención era ir rio arriba y localizar el mayor número de pozas pequeñas y grandes para hacer un pequeño inventario y también una visita. El paisaje me devoraba por la espesura de su vegetación, helechos, plantas de agua y la arboleda de pinos, robles y castaños daban esa característica peculiar de las tierras del interior de Galicia y su flora y fauna. Las pozas iban apareciendo ante mis ojos y me fijaba en la trasparencia de sus aguas y en su profundidad, calculaba que algunas tendrían entre los 3 a 4 metros de profundidad en sus zonas más erosionadas.

My more adventurous side led me to a path that descended from one of the slopes and took me even deeper into the mountain. The river was changing and becoming narrower, making it more difficult to move and advance along it. I continued to move forward, since at a certain distance I saw what seemed to me to be an old stone construction that was very deteriorated and barely engulfed by vegetation. I was able to get there by dodging stones and jumping from one bank to the other where I saw that I could continue until I reached that objective. The destruction and abandonment of that structure began to give me a clue, and a round stone among the vegetation confirmed to me that it was the remains of an old water mill.

Mi parte más aventurera me llevo a un camino que bajaba desde una de las laderas y me internaba aun mucho más en la montaña. El rio iba cambiando y se hacía más estrecho con más dificultad para moverse y avanzar por él. Seguí en este empeño de avance ya que a cierta distancia vi lo que me parecía una vieja construcción de piedra que estaba muy deteriorada y apenas engullida por la vegetación. Pude llegar sorteando piedras y saltando de una orilla a otra por donde veía que podía continuar hasta alcanzar ese objetivo. La destrucción y abandono de aquella estructura empezó a darme pista y una piedra redonda entre la vegetación me confirmo que se trataba de los restos de un viejo molino de agua.

I couldn't leave this beautiful place without visiting the old monastery in Melón. With a long period of reconstruction, this monastery has unique characteristics and is one of the places that has surprised me the most in its architectural aspect.

No podía marcharme de este precioso lugar sin hacer una pequeña visita al antiguo monasterio que hay en Melón. Con un gran periodo de reconstrucción este monasterio presenta características únicas y es uno de los lugares que más me ha sorprendido en su aspecto arquitectónico.
