Good day community

A series of adventures in the extreme northwest of the country led me to visit a small piece of land located between two estuaries, the Vigo and Pontevedra estuaries in the autonomous community of Galicia in Spain. The long arms of the sea that penetrate kilometers into the land are one of the special peculiarities of these Galician lands and their names are divided into high estuaries and low estuaries. This small peninsula or point is located in the low estuary in the southernmost estuary of the community. I have a special affection for this land since I have known it since I was a child and it has very special peculiarities. The intention of this trip was not to spend a day at the beach with a towel and umbrella but to tour the entire Punta Ballena area, its lake and its small beaches nestled along this coast. Access to this place is not easy since it is not a very touristy and crowded one and you have to know a little about the region to be able to get there. At this point the waters of the Atlantic Ocean beat against these coasts that are rugged with areas of cliffs and rocks and small and protected sandbanks, some of them wild.

The name of this place comes from a whaling past, from this point they observed the route of the native cetaceans of these waters, the humpback whale and the sperm whale, which had their migration routes and their mating or supply places. This place was in the last century an area dedicated to the hunting and butchering of many of these specimens and people lived almost exclusively from this work. The remains of buildings and the old factories where they processed are in decay and the total collapse of some of them is very close. Many stories are told in this area about that period between the 60s and 80s of the last century and in my memory I retain some memories of that time. Because of their near extinction at a global level, the international agreement or moratorium was signed to stop their hunting and in 1982 the definitive agreement was signed by the CBI, a union of 88 member countries, to determine the end of commercial hunting. For the region this meant abandoning this work and converting its activity to focus on fishing and canning.

Just behind this small sandy beach of Las Conchas and among thick vegetation, I found a dirt road that led me through the trees to the Congorza lagoon. A freshwater lake so close to the sea that many animal and plant species had a special ecosystem. The radical change of scenery just a few meters from the rocky and beach landscapes was like a breath of fresh air, like a large green blanket and the blue of the sky reflected in the water of this beautiful lake.

I followed the sandy path that took me to Areamilla beach on this point, located just opposite the Cíes Islands. The weather in Galicia is very changeable and a large accumulation of thick clouds was coming in from the coast. The atmosphere became completely different and the natural light that hit it completely enveloped the whole area I was walking through. I approached the shore and spent a good while watching the waves come and go in their tide and also how the sea hit the rocks at the end of this sandy area.

I walked along the fine white sand to the area where the path was. The vegetation made its way through the sand, showing me the adaptation that these plant species have to these harsh conditions of wind, salinity and soil with few nutrients.

As dusk fell, I sat on some rocks to observe this landscape that showed me the best colors amidst a change in weather that made it even more special. Watching the sunset in this area is one of the best memories of this fantastic trip.
