Good day community

In the middle of the Medo valley, bathed by the Arnoya river in the province of Ourense in the autonomous community of Galicia, lies the thermal town of Baños de Molgas. I left the city of Ourense, which I had chosen as the starting point for this entire tour of the southeast of the community, and headed along the provincial road OU-101 until I reached Maceda. In this area of the province, the landscape became especially mountainous, and as we approached the east of the community, it became more evident. From this place, I took the OU-108 road that would take me to my goal. Upon arrival, I headed along a small road towards a wider area on the river where the river walk began and there was a large recreational area. What awaited me in Baños de Molgas began to become evident in this area of the river, very well maintained and brightly coloured.

En pleno valle del Medo bañado por el rio Arnoya en la provincia de Ourense en la comunidad autónoma de Galicia se encuentra este termal pueblo de Baños de Molgas. Salí de la ciudad de Ourense que decidí como punto de partida de todo este recorrido por el sureste de la comunidad y me dirigí por la carretera provincial OU-101 hasta llegar a Maceda. En esta zona de la provincia el paisaje se torno especialmente montañoso y en la medida que nos acercamos hacia el este de la comunidad es más evidente. Desde este lugar tome la carretera OU-108 que me llevaría a mi objetivo. Al llegar me dirigí por una pequeña carretera hacia una zona más amplia en el rio donde empezaban el paseo fluvial y había una gran área de recreo. Lo que me esperaba en Baños de Molgas empezaba a hacerse evidente en esta zona del río, muy bien cuidado y de colores vivos.

This area of the river is well known in the region for its reputation as a trout river and many fishing enthusiasts have this town as their destination and starting point for their fishing trips. The path along the river takes me to the area of the bridges that I have to cross in order to enter the heart of the town. It is here that I find out that it possibly dates back to Roman times since one of its roads crossed through this place and there is evidence of this in its Roman bridge and in the thermal baths, thermal water areas of the town.

Esta zona del rio es muy conocida en la región por su fama de rio truchero y muchos aficionados a la pesca tienen como destino y punto de partida en sus pescas este pueblo. El camino por el rio me lleva a la zona de los puentes donde cruzar para poder entrar en el corazón de la villa. Es aquí donde me informo que posiblemente sea de la época romana ya que una de sus vías atravesaba por este lugar y deja evidencia en su puente romano y en las termas, zonas de aguas termales de la localidad.

Before entering the centre I stopped at some rural houses at the entrance to the town and saw in several small farms what looked like an improvised museum of old farming implements. One of the most popular architectural motifs in the region of Galicia are its “hórreos” (granaries) used in ancient times to store grain and food. In Baños de Molgas I was able to see some of these architectural examples, a hallmark of Galician popular architecture.

Antes de entrar en el centro me detuve en unas casas rurales en la entrada del pueblo y observe en varias pequeñas fincas lo que parecía un museo improvisado de viejos aperos de labranza. Uno de los motivos arquitectónicos más populares de la región de Galicia son su “Hórreos” destinados en la antigüedad a la conservación del grano y alimentos. En Baños de Molgas pude ver algunos de estos ejemplares arquitectónicos sello de la arquitectura popular de Galicia.

Streets towards the center

The Church of San Salvador de Molgas stood out above all the town. I walked around its perimeter between the narrow streets, although in this area of the church they were a little more open. I was impressed by its tall, slender tower and its interior. I like to visit these places because they are the main testimony of an architectural past full of connotations and stories.

Sobre toda la población destacaba en especial la Iglesia de San Salvador de Molgas. Hice un recorrido por todo su perímetro entre las estrechas calles aunque en esta zona de la iglesia se abrían un poco más. Me impresiono su alta y estilizada torre y su interior. Me gusta visitar estos sitios por ser testimonio principal de un pasado arquitectónico cargado de connotaciones e historias.

The area of the Roman bridge and the spa building captured my attention as the riverbank was always close to me. In this part of the town I felt like I was in a magical place as the colours and the promenade on one of the riverbanks were all mingling and captured my attention. The rural houses in this area with their wide galleries and windows and the green and red colours gave a special touch to these small river avenues.

La zona del puente romano y el edificio del balneario acapararon toda mi atención ya que en todo ese recorrido la cercanía de la orilla del rio estaba presente. En esta parte de la villa me parecía estar en un lugar mágico ya que se mezclaban los colores y el paseo que en uno de los márgenes del rio captaban toda mi atención. Las casas rurales d esta zona con sus amplias galerías y ventanales y los colores verdes y rojos daban un punto especial a estas pequeñas avenidas fluviales.

Finally, I had to visit the fountain and the hot springs of the town. These waters were already known in Roman times and were used for therapeutic purposes due to their mineral qualities. The fountain and the bath that collected them had a strong green color due to the proliferation of algae that have their ecosystem in these hot waters.

Por último me quedaba visitar la fuente y las aguas termales de la villa. Ya en tiempo de los romanos eran conocidas estas aguas y las usaban para fines terapéuticos por sus cualidades minerales. La fuente y el baño que las recogía presentaba un fuerte color verde debido a la proliferación de algas que tienen su ecosistema en estas aguas calientes.
