DIY: How to Make a Knife Handle Using Wood
As I told you at the beginning, many people when their knives break their handles, they immediately throw them in the trash, well friends, today I am going to recover an old knife with a broken handle, I want to share this work with you. , so you can do it.
when necessary, because over time these utensils break the handle.
Picture of the knife before repair:
Materials and tools:
Two 4 x 12 cm wooden boards, preferably mahogany.
Epoxy glue
320 grit sandpaper
Natural varnish
Cutter or razor
Lime
6 x 2 mm screws
3 pins threaded inside
Screwdriver
Process:
This knife has a too broken handle, so I'm going to remove the pieces that still remain and then clean it:
Now I will cut two pieces of wood to make the two covers of the handle, these pieces will be wider than the part where the handle goes, because the idea is to lower them little by little with the knife until it touches the metal, which will give it the shape :
In this step, I will place the knife on the pieces of wood, to mark the 3 points, where I will open the holes for the screws, these holes I will open with a drill:
Now, I am going to place the threaded pins inside the holes of the boards, for this I had to widen the holes to the size of the threaded pins. To better understand the work, the pins will be used to join the two wooden caps that will form the handle, these pins are screwed inside to place the 6 screws, 3 on each side:
In this step I will place the knife between the two wooden covers, as you can see in the images, I will put a little silicone to seal the joints, we will do it to prevent it from entering the water when we wash the knife, then I put the screws and I fit the two pieces of wood well:
Once the two wooden covers have been correctly adjusted, the next step will be to lower the wood with the cutter. The work consists of carving the wood until it makes contact with the metal, we will do this little by little, until we can give it the shape that the metal of the knife has:
. Now I will use the file and sandpaper, to finish the wood of the handle, this is a job that requires a little patience, to correct the details little by little, as you can see in the following images, the handle is practically almost ready:
In the upper part of the handle, there has been a slot of one millimeter, between the edge and the metal, I am going to fill this with glue and sawdust, I did this to hide the metal of the knife:
Friends, I think that so far the knife with the new handle looks pretty good, in the next step I will cover the heads of the screws with some small aluminum caps, for this I will widen the hole to fit these pieces, which will be fixed with epoxy glue:
To finish, I will paint the wooden handle with a natural color varnish:
Resultado de la obra:
I hope you liked this idea, and you can recover your knives yourselves, this job is easy to do, greetings.
