The beginning sketch. I haven't drawn for a long time so I used some references from my pinterest to get started. I knew I wanted to draw something from my fantasy universe: Lanh. Very sword and sandal, never got the sandal in.
I decide the lighting and start blocking in tone. Color comes after this step. Its important to get your values down solid first, I repeat to myself, as Im zoomed 400% trying to figure out the hair. Still making the same rookie mistakes.
The color is just a layer with a overlay blend mode. I should have went for the hue blend mode and built up to the saturation of overlay but I felt in a hurry for some reason. Dark skin tones have always been difficult for me to paint despite being dark skinned myself. I feel like this is a pretty good study of dark tones but I can still do better and I have to study different lighting conditions as well.
The fellow holding the swords is an aristocrat from an island called Oe in the world of Lanh.
