So far, we have collected over 4,000 tons of shell–that’s over 8 million pounds! Over 1,000 volunteers have rolled up their sleeves to help shovel, bag and move shell to prepare for reef projects. We’ve already deployed two reefs, creating over 3,000 linear feet of living shoreline that is now helping to buffer our coastal marshes from erosion.
Interesting article about a coastal restoration project that is using oyster shells to create a living shoreline that buffers wave erosion. I'm all for this, putting the empty shells back in nature where they came from instead of a landfill somewhere. There's also a Christmas tree project where after Christmas the trees are put into certain locations in the marsh to do the exact same thing. That project has been going on for decades now. I'd love to see more 'waste' vegetation used in a similar way instead of thrown into a landfills....
