Give the winds and waves of Hurricane Hanna credit for mixing oxygen-rich surface water into the coastal area's bottom waters this year, resulting in the smaller dead zone, said Nancy Rabalais, a Louisiana State University marine researcher who oversees the annual mapping program.
Interesting article about the dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico caused by nutrients in the fresh water from the Mississippi River. Another great reason for more fresh water diversions up and down the River, the diversions would move the nutrients through marsh and swamp area that could filter out the nutrient. Right now too much of the River water is going into the Gulf in one spot, a spot with little to no vegetation. And the dying wetlands could use a boost of nutrients at this point.
