Presentemos a Elena.

The Weight of Silence: The Receiver's Mask
Hello, @holos-lotus community!
I’m here to follow @emiliorios's initiative regarding the masks that live among us. Today, I want to propose a look inward, to a place where noise doesn't reach. Masks don’t always make a ruckus or seek the spotlight. Sometimes, the heaviest disguise is the one we use to disappear from others' emotions while remaining physically present. It is that silent armor we put on so that no one asks us anything important, so the spotlight never hits us. Today, we talk about the mask of invisibility—a shell many of us wear to protect ourselves from the risk of being seen, judged, or worse, rejected.
✦ ──────────────────── ✦
Let’s introduce Elena. If you know an "Elena," you probably think she is the most empathetic person in the world. She’s the one who always asks how you’re doing, remembers your birthday, and listens to your problems for hours without yawning. Everyone seeks out Elena because she is a "safe space." However, if you think back, you’ll realize you know nothing real about her. You know how she takes her coffee or what movie she watched yesterday, but you have no idea what hurts her, what scares her, or the dream she hasn’t told anyone. Elena is an expert in the art of distraction: she reflects the question back to you before you can delve into her soul.
✦ ────────────────────── ✦
The problem with this mask is that, over time, it creates devastating emotional isolation. Elena feels alone even when surrounded by people who love her. Why? Because she knows people love her "character"—the one who listens and causes no trouble—but they don’t know the woman who cries in silence because she feels no one is genuinely interested in her. It is a bit paradoxical and sad: she has locked the door herself and then wonders why no one enters. This lack of effectiveness in her relationships eventually withers her self-esteem, turning her into a ghost in her own life.
✦ ──────────────────── ✦
Using the mask of invisibility daily leads to a confusion of identity. It reaches a point where Elena no longer knows if she is quiet by nature or simply afraid to speak. This mask blocks her growth because it prevents her from facing the challenge of being authentic. In adult life, responsibility isn't just about meeting work goals or schedules; it’s also the responsibility of being honest about what we feel. Failing at this is failing at the most important task of our existence: allowing others to love us for who we are, with all our cracks and shadows included.
✦ ──────────────────── ✦
I hope this short reflection invites us to check if we are using silence as a hiding place. Taking off the "receiver's mask" requires immense courage because it implies accepting that we are also beings who need to be heard, held, and understood. The next time someone asks how you are, try telling the truth, even if it’s a small, fragile truth. Vulnerability is not a weakness that puts us in danger; it is the most human bridge that exists to truly connect with the world. At the end of the day, what really saves us is not the mask that protects us, but the hand we are able to extend when we dare to take it off.
