Today was Sunday, and I spent part of the day with some of my old work friends. We decided to meet for lunch and eat fish together. My friends had already been to this place before, so this time I simply followed their recommendation. I had never been there, and I was curious to try something different.
Bugün pazardı ve günün bir kısmını eski iş arkadaşlarımla geçirdim. Öğle yemeğinde buluşup birlikte balık yemeye karar verdik. Arkadaşlarım daha önce bu mekâna gitmişti. Bu kez onların tavsiyesine güvenip ben de gittim. Daha önce hiç gitmemiştim ve farklı bir şey denemek istiyordum.
The place was quite simple, but I really liked the atmosphere. Fresh fish and different seafood products were displayed behind the counter. Even the tables had a little sea theme with shells and starfish under the glass. It was not a fancy restaurant, but everything felt clean, simple and connected to the food they served.
Mekân oldukça sadeydi ama atmosferini gerçekten sevdim. Tezgâhta farklı balıklar ve deniz ürünleri sergileniyordu. Masalarda bile camın altında deniz kabukları ve denizyıldızlarıyla küçük bir deniz teması vardı. Çok gösterişli bir restoran değildi ama her şey temiz, sade ve servis ettikleri yemekle uyumluydu.
I wanted to try something I had never eaten before. They told me the fish came from Norway, and the dish on the menu was called Lekkerbek. I ordered the Lekkerbek menu. It came with large pieces of fried fish, French fries, salad and two different sauces. I also ordered şalgam, a traditional Turkish drink, with my meal.
Daha önce hiç yemediğim bir şey denemek istedim. Balığın Norveç’ten geldiğini söylediler ve menüde yemeğin adı Lekkerbek olarak geçiyordu. Ben de Lekkerbek menü söyledim. Büyük kızarmış balık parçaları, patates kızartması, salata ve iki farklı sosla geldi. Yanına da geleneksel içeceklerimizden şalgam söyledim.
When the plate arrived, the first thing that surprised me was the size. It was a really big portion. I honestly did not expect that much food. The fish was crispy outside and soft inside. It was fried, but it did not feel too heavy. The sauces also worked very well with the fish.
Tabak geldiğinde beni ilk şaşırtan şey porsiyonun büyüklüğü oldu. Gerçekten çok büyük bir porsiyondu. Açıkçası bu kadar yemek beklemiyordum. Balığın dışı çıtır, içi ise yumuşaktı. Kızartma olmasına rağmen beni hiç ağırlaştırmadı. Yanındaki soslar da balıkla çok güzel uyuyordu.
The service was also very fast. They told us that fried dishes usually come quickly, and they were right. We did not wait long at all. My friends chose other fish dishes, including sea bass, so everyone had something a little different on the table.
Servis de oldukça hızlıydı. Kızartma yemeklerin genellikle çabuk geldiğini söylediler ve gerçekten öyle oldu. Çok fazla beklemedik. Arkadaşlarım levrek gibi farklı balık çeşitleri tercih etti. Böylece masada herkesin tabağında biraz farklı bir şey vardı.
Another surprise was the price. My Lekkerbek menu was 445 TL, which is roughly 9 dollars at the current exchange rate. For Istanbul, I thought this was a very reasonable price, especially considering the size of the portion. There was bread on the table too, but I did not even need it. The fish and fries were more than enough for me.
Bir diğer şaşırtıcı şey ise fiyattı. Benim Lekkerbek menüm 445 TL, yani güncel kurla yaklaşık 9 dolar civarındaydı. İstanbul şartlarında, özellikle porsiyonun büyüklüğünü düşününce bence oldukça iyi bir fiyattı. Masada ekmek de vardı ama ona bile ihtiyaç duymadım. Balık ve patates beni fazlasıyla doyurdu.
While eating, I actually thought about how we sometimes automatically choose a hamburger or another fast food menu when we want something quick. But for a similar budget, I would much rather eat a plate like this from time to time. Maybe once a week or once every two weeks, having a good fish meal sounds like a much better choice to me.
Yemek yerken şunu düşündüm. Bazen hızlı bir şey yemek istediğimizde otomatik olarak hamburger ya da başka bir fast food menüsüne yöneliyoruz. Ama benzer bir bütçeyle arada böyle güzel bir balık tabağı yemeyi kesinlikle tercih ederim. Haftada bir ya da iki haftada bir böyle bir balık yemeği yemek bana çok daha güzel geliyor.
Of course, the best part was still meeting my old friends. We talked, laughed and caught up while trying different dishes. A simple Sunday lunch turned into a very enjoyable little weekend experience.
Tabii günün en güzel tarafı yine eski arkadaşlarımla buluşmaktı. Farklı yemekler denerken sohbet ettik, güldük ve birbirimizden haber aldık. Sade bir pazar öğle yemeği, çok keyifli küçük bir hafta sonu etkinliğine dönüştü.
Sometimes that is all you need for a good Sunday. Good friends, a new taste and a table full of conversation.
Bazen güzel bir pazar günü için gereken şey gerçekten bu kadar basit. Güzel arkadaşlar, yeni bir lezzet ve bol sohbetli bir masa.
After lunch, we wanted tea and something sweet. As you probably know, we really love drinking tea after a meal, even after fish. We asked for tea, but the restaurant did not have any, so we decided to go somewhere else.
Yemekten sonra çay içmek ve tatlı yemek istedik. Bilirsiniz, biz yemekten sonra çay içmeyi çok severiz, balık yemiş olsak bile. Çay istedik ama mekânda yoktu. Biz de başka bir yere geçmeye karar verdik.
We found a more traditional and cozy place nearby. The atmosphere was warm and very different from the fish restaurant. We ordered tea and sütlaç, a traditional Turkish rice pudding. It was the perfect way to finish the meal.
Yakınlarda daha otantik ve sıcak bir mekân bulduk. Ortamı balık restoranından çok farklıydı ve çok keyifliydi. Çay ve sütlaç söyledik. Bence yemeği bitirmek için bundan daha güzel bir seçim olamazdı.
We stayed there for a while, drinking tea, eating dessert and talking. The conversation was just as enjoyable as the food. In the end, our simple fish lunch turned into a long and very pleasant Sunday with old friends.
Bir süre orada oturduk, çayımızı içtik, tatlımızı yedik ve sohbet ettik. Sohbet de yemek kadar keyifliydi. Böylece sade bir balık yemeği, eski arkadaşlarla uzun ve çok güzel bir pazar gününe dönüştü.
