Earnings and Revenues:
The first quarter’s adjusted earnings finally came in showing 53 cents gain per share and ensures its net revenue of $2,746.7 million. This net revenue is 10.8% higher compared last year.
Revenues in the US generated $1,841.1 million as the company’s case-ready and small bird business improve its performance while the demand for Pilgrim’s Pride and Del Dia’s chicken products also increased giving the company $361.3 million revenue for its Mexican operations. As for the company’s European sales, the careful and creative integration of the activities of Moy Park buy-out improved the European operations by 18.6% delivering $544.3 million revenue.
This year, the company’s cost of sales has flared up to 10.6% compared last year while the gross margin has expanded 20 basis points as helped by its strong performance. The selling, general and administrative expenses decreased 5% compared last year while the adjusted earnings came in at 9.9%.
Pilgrim’s Pride recorded $580.8 million cash and cash equivalents for the first quarter which is lower than what is recorded on December 31, 2017. Its capital spending amounted to $76.7 million is a lot lower than the $121.6 million incurred in the previous year.
Outlook:
The strategic integration of Pilgrim and Moy Park is seen to boost the profitability and growth of the company.
VGM Scores: PPC has a poor Growth Score of F while its momentum is doing better with a score of D. While on the value side, it has a grade of A making it the top choice for investment strategy. Generally, it has a VGM score of C and this is a good choice for those who are not focused on one strategy.
