Un poco de mi entreno (1).gif

English

Big hello, hivers; I hope you're doing great. This time, I'm bringing you a frequently asked question in calisthenics: rest time: Is it important to reduce it? Stay tuned to find out.

Reducing rest time in calisthenics can be beneficial, but it depends on your goals and how you implement it. It's not a one-size-fits-all strategy that works for everyone all the time. Here's why.

When can reducing rest time be beneficial?

- Improved muscular endurance: By reducing rest time, your muscles have less time to recover, forcing them to work through fatigue. This is great for improving your ability to perform more repetitions or hold a position for longer, i.e., your muscular endurance.

- Increased metabolic intensity: Shorter rest periods keep your heart rate elevated for longer, which can increase caloric expenditure and improve your cardiovascular conditioning. This is similar to what happens in HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training).

- Hypertrophy: For muscle growth, metabolic stress is sought. Shorter rest periods (30-90 seconds) with a moderate repetition volume can be effective in achieving this stress and promoting hypertrophy.

- Work capacity training: It allows you to perform more work in less time, which is efficient if you have limited time to train.

When is it not advisable to reduce rest time?

- Maximal strength gains: To develop maximal strength, you need to allow your central nervous system to fully recover between sets. This typically requires longer rest periods (2-5 minutes or even longer), as the goal is to lift the maximum weight or perform the most difficult movement with the best possible technique in each set. If you reduce rest periods, your performance in subsequent sets will decrease significantly.

- Skill learning: When learning complex calisthenics movements (such as muscle-ups, handstands, planks), technique and form are paramount. You need to be fresh to execute each repetition correctly. Too short rest periods can lead to poor form, increasing the risk of injury and delaying skill progress.

- General recovery and preventing overtraining: Rest is critical for muscle and nervous system recovery. Consistently reducing rest time too much, especially during intense workouts, can lead to overtraining, with symptoms such as chronic fatigue, decreased performance, sleep problems, irritability, and an increased risk of injury.

summary

Reducing rest time is a training tool you can use for specific goals such as muscular endurance or metabolic hypertrophy. However, it's not suitable for all goals, especially if your priority is maximal strength or learning new skills, where full recovery between sets is crucial.

Ideally, you should vary your rest time based on the goal of each session or training block and, most importantly, listen to your body. If you feel your performance dropping drastically or that you're overtraining, it's a sign that you need more rest between sets or between training sessions.

Aqu铆 te explico por qu茅.
