A few days ago we were on a wonderful and special trip. We spent several days in the town of Merito, Municipality Cross Salmeron Acosta of the Araya Peninsula in the state of Sucre Venezuela. In this town there are endless streams or creeks, which pass through the center of the various mountain systems that are found in the area. As you can see, at this time due to the absence of rain, these streams are very empty, there are very few pools that are active and almost no water.
All the rocks that you can see, are of different shapes and colors and from them are extracted the famous slabs, which are used for the construction of retaining walls, or for the placement of the same on the walls of the fronts of things as decoration. These same stones, believe it or not, are moved by the strong currents until they reach the village, and I tell you, the village is far from this stream. Now, when it rains even further inland, literally this whole area fills with water, we are small compared to the depth that originates in this locality.
As I said before, when it fills up, the currents are so strong that both the water and the stones go straight to the town, which has caused the destruction of the walls of the houses, that is why the residents of Merito have been in charge of the construction of retaining walls, so that when the water arrives it is diverted without causing much damage. An example of this was in December 1999, when what we have called the Vargas tragedy occurred, at that time Vargas state, today La Guaira state. At that time the rains in our country Venezuela were extremely strong and constant, which caused impressive landslides causing the death of thousands of people.
In Merito, thank God there were no human losses, however, there was a lot of material damage so many people lost all their possessions. As a result of this, as I mentioned, they started to build walls around their homes. The truth is that this town is very beautiful, it is magical and has a lot of history. In addition, the villagers say that you cannot go along this creek at noon, because according to them, the road divides in two without realizing it and therefore people get lost. We just passed by there at that time, but thank God we were able to find the way back, hahahahahah, can you imagine, I would not be telling this. Hace pocos días estuvimos en un viaje maravilloso y especial. Pasamos varios días en el pueblo de Merito, Municipio Cruz Salmeron Acosta de la Península de Araya en el estado Sucre Venezuela. En esta localidad existen un sin fin de arroyos o quebradas, las cuales pasan por el centro de los distintos sistemas montañosos que en la la zona se encuentran. Como podrán ver, en estos momentos por la ausencia de lluvias, estos arroyos están muy vacíos, son muy pocas las pozas que están activas y las mismas casi sin agua.
Todas las rocas que pueden visualizar, son de diversas formas y colores y de ellas se extraen las famosas lajas, que sirven para la construcción de muros de contención, o para la colocación de las mismas en las paredes de los frentes de las cosas a modo de decoración. Estas mismas piedras aunque parezca mentira, son movilizadas por las fuertes corrientes hasta llegar al pueblo, y les digo, el pueblo queda lejos de este arroyo. Ahora, cuando llueve más aún muy adentro, literalmente toda esta zona se llena de agua, nos quedamos pequeños con respecto a la profundidad que se origina en esta localidad.
Como dije antes, cuando esto se llena, las corrientes son tan fuertes que tanto el agua como las piedras se van directo al pueblo, lo que ha originado la destrucción de las paredes de las casas, por ello, que los moradores de Merito se han encargado de la construcción de muros de contención, para que cuando el agua llegue ésta se desvíe sin causar mucho daño. Un ejemplo de ello, fue cuando en diciembre del año 1999 ocurrió lo que hemos llamado la tragedia de Vargas, en aquel tiempo estado Vargas, hoy estado La Guaira. Para ese tiempo las lluvias en nuestro país Venezuela fueron sumamente fuertes y constantes, lo que ocasionó deslaves impresionantes causando la muerte de Miles de personas.
En Merito, gracias a Dios no hubo pérdidas humanas, sin embargo, hubieron muchos daños materiales por lo varias personas perdieron todas sus posesiones. A raíz de esto, como mencioné, iniciaron a construir muros alrededor de sus viviendas. Lo cierto es que este pueblo es muy bonito, es mágico y tiene mucha historia. Además, los pobladores dicen que por este arroyo no se puede ir en horas del mediodía, porque según ellos, el camino se divide en dos sin uno darse cuenta y por ende la gente de pierde. Justamente pasamos por allí a esa hora, pero gracias a Dios pudimos encontrar el camino de retorno, jajajaj, se imaginan, no estuviera contando esto.
