Apart from ovulation pain, few other things can cause cyclical pain (pains repeating at every cycle). Such include endometriosis and functional cyst. Functional cyst is still related to ovulation, and as such have similar timing in the menstrual cycle. It is self limiting and rarely required treatment other than analgesics. The pain of endometriosis is worse during or around mensuration.
Ovulation pain is usually referred to as mid cycle pain or mittelschmerz pain. The exact time of this pain varies slightly from individual to individual depending on cycle length. But the central thing is that it occurs few days after mensuration and last for only few hours to days, and recurs about the same time
in subsequent cycles. For individuals with 28 days cycle, mid cycle pain occurs around 14th day of their menstruation cycle.
The pain is felt on the lower abdomen and can be on either or both sides. It is usually dull, pressure-like or "hooking" in character.
Ovulation simply refers to the releasing of eggs by a woman in her reproductive life. There are two ovaries in every woman and either of this can release egg in each cycle.
The eggs are released by rupturing of the Wall of the ovary and this can causes pain. More so, released egg and associated fluids/particles can cause some inflammation around the area and cause you pain.
Ovulation is not only about changes in the Vaginal discharge(Cervical mucous changes) You don't have to worry if the pain is ovulatary as characterized above. When there is no association abnormal Vaginal discharge or itching and the pain doesn't persists after the ovulation period.
