This list wasn't going to be quite so long at first, but I just kept finding good stuff. Everything on the list is available free of charge, except 3 of the books (but the Goodreads link may help you find them in a local library).

WeUseCoins.com - A general info site with the novice in mind
The Book of Satoshi This book collects nearly all the public writings of Satoshi Nakomoto from email lists, forum posts, and of course the bitcoin whitepaper.
The Age of Cryptocurrency This book gives a good broad overview of the origins and effects of cryptocurrency.
Wildcat Currency This book discusses the impact of virtual currency on the economy. It covers centralized virtual currencies like in video games as much or more than it covers cryptocurrency.
