There is almost nothing that one wouldn't find on the internet these days since everyone is trying to trend and a lot of people are trying to make internet money, it has become very possible for them to post almost anything on the internet, as a blogger as well who is trying to catch up on trendy news, I try to remain updated with current trends at all times.
Yesterday, the viral news of a pregnant woman who was actively drinking beer made rounds, and people had so much to say the comment section was filled with so much lashing of her actions and blame for this new generation on their carelessness. It was yesterday through the comment section that I learned about the FETAL ALCOHOL SPECTRUM DISORDER, and I had to do an extensive study about it.
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder is a total coverage for the description of other disorders that causes the consumption of alcohol by a mother during pregnancy. The syndrome was named in 1973, and after it was named, there came several controversies about its actual existence. Continuous uncertainty remains persistent as regards the level of maternal alcohol consumption that can cause damage.
There are five disorders that FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME DISORDER (FASD)encompasses, we have the;
FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME (FAS)
PARTIAL FETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME (pFAS)
ALCOHOL-RELATED NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDER (ARND)
A NEUROBEHAVIORAL DISORDER associated with PRENATAL ALCOHOL EXPOSURE (ND-PAE)
ALCOHOL-RELATED BIRTH DEFECTS (ARBD).
All these existing fetal alcohol spectrum disorders come from a common cause, and that is prenatal alcohol exposure. Alcohol remains teratogenic to a fetus, the effect is an irreversible and wide-ranging one. Although, a higher amount of exposure to prenatal alcohol exposure has been associated with increased case of incidence and severity of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders.
Rather than completely killing cells, maternal consumption of alcohol can alter the establishment of epigenetic marks in the epigenetic programming period of the embryo, the change in the regulation of genes, and consequently, bringing forth the wide FASD phenotype.
There is no safe time at all during pregnancy in which alcohol can be consumed without posing a risk to the fetus. Alcohol remains teratogenic during the three trimesters. Any volume of alcohol consumed at any pregnancy stage can create irreversible damage that could result in serious irreversible damage that would lead to fetal alcohol spectrum disorder.
The risk factors for this syndrome are often with women who are over 30 years of age, and who have a long history of alcohol, women who have poor nutrition, having one child who has fetal alcohol syndrome opens up the room for other incoming children, and women who have genetic susceptibility may slowly metabolize alcohol.
Parental alcohol exposure has remained a major cause of preventable congenital disabilities, as the presentation of fetal alcohol spectrum disorders could vary widely. In some cases, parental exposure to alcohol is an unintentional act, as most women even continue to consume alcohol before they realize they are pregnant, most women would usually stop the consumption of alcohol once they realize they are pregnant, but some women would stubbornly not stop.
Several variables would help in the determination of whether an infant will be born with FASD or not, and of course how severe it would be as well. Some of the deciding factors are dependent on; the volume of alcohol consumption of the pregnant mother, the rate at which her body metabolizes the alcohol, and also, the stage of fetal development when the body was exposed to alcohol. Stoner said, there are excessive variables at play to now estimate a safe drinking level during pregnancy.
The safest level of alcohol consumption remains zero for a pregnant woman.
Every disorder in the fetal alcohol spectrum could cause problems with social skills, self-regulation, math skills, and executive functioning. The presence of these deficits in a child would interfere with a child's school performance and even their ability to make friends. While it is known that, FASD creates learning difficulty in children, the associated symptoms remain unpredictable.
FASD has grown to become one of the most common prevention of intellectual disability in the world, this means once a mother can avoid it, he could save the intellectual function of the child a great deal. The behavioral issues linked with FASD are also common, but not often regarded as a severe classification, as all are considered normal stubborn child problems.
So many of the symptoms of FASD can look like intentionally willful or oppositional behavior when there are underlying neurodevelopmental explanations.
To make matters even worse, most children with FASD usually attend schools where the teachers have little to no knowledge when it comes to the identification, assessment, and management of students who have learning, developmental or social problems associated with FASD.
There are only a few FADS clinics that would provide a full-service diagnosis, based on the estimate made by "O'Connor, and so many women do not still understand the full harm of what the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy could cause. Sometimes, the process of therapy may be the solution to this problem for a woman who was a strong alcoholic before she got pregnant, it may be really difficult to get her to suddenly stop.
Conclusion.
It is strongly advised that zero levels of alcohol should be consumed during pregnancy, different disorders could come from alcohol consumption, while on the journey to have a strong, healthy, and active baby at the end of the nine months journey, as well as have that baby who will not have any disorder in the light of interacting with friends and colleagues, it is necessary to listen to medical experts who often advice zero consumption of alcohol.
