Shopping Showdown: Online vs. In-Store - Weighing the Pros and Cons

Online shopping has grown in popularity in recent years, with an increasing number of people using their mobile devices to buy everything from clothing and electronics to groceries and household items. However, the advent of online shopping has sparked debate about the relative advantages of shopping online versus in person.

Surely, I have had experiences with shopping in person, as that was the everyday lifestyle before the rise of online shopping. And when online shopping became readily accessible in my country, I was often fascinated by the idea of not leaving my lazy couch and having my desired items come home to me instead—and I often did indulge myself in the experience.

However. my experience over the years has been sufficient to help me develop the proclivity to choose one over the other in certain circumstances. Because, as we all know, there are certain perks to choosing one over the other in specific situations—in my country, at least.

There are many factors to consider when it comes to picking one over the other. And to better explain myself, I will be segregating my opinions into a few categories:

• Conveniences & Selection

When it comes to a matter of how accessible and easy it is to find whatever I may be looking for, online shopping may always beat physical shopping to the punch. Online shopping allows one to shop anytime, anywhere, while physical shopping is limited to store hours and location. An example is a time when I needed to get parts and materials to use for my final year project.

I am building a prototype of an automated car wash system for my final project in school, and it requires certain components that would require deep digging to find. They are specific products that are not interchangeable.

Some parts of my project

To get these components in person would require me to travel a journey of about 8 hours, if not way more, just to get there and begin looking for them. Kindly note "begin looking for it," as it means I would still need to go all about searching for these components. And count me lucky if I do find all of them on the same day.

Knowing all the hassle I could go through to begin gathering the components, I simply opted for online shopping, Aliexpress, and went on to search for them. And without much time and complications, I found all I needed and proceeded to purchase them.

In this case, online shopping proved to be more efficient.

• Price

A very crucial concern for many individuals like myself when it comes to shopping is how little one can pay to get good value. Basically, most people would love to get more for their money and not pay more than they should.

This heavily influences my decision to do physical or online shopping. And the way online shopping works rarely allows for bargains, whereas physical shopping allows for price negotiations as if the transaction were done in person.

There are instances where one may find that goods on the e-market are actually cheaper than what they may find in the local markets. And this is good, but the problem lies in the fact that the goods are actually way more expensive than they are in the local shops. What do you do then? Argue with your screen? most emphatically not.

The aforementioned case applies directly to web-based e-markets. How about online vendors? How easy is it to persuade them over chat or a phone call? Is it as simple to strike a good deal for oneself virtually as it is to negotiate with the vendor in person? Nope, I presume.

In this case, I may want to go to the location of the product and its seller and try to get the "whatever" for $35 rather than $70. In a few minutes of negotiating, I either get a good deal or I walk out without the "whatever." In either case, I'd be better off knowing I tried to get a good deal rather than having some ridiculous price shoved down my throat.

• Delivery & Experience

Online shopping provides the exquisite experience of not having to leave a spot and having your goods come right after you. Physical shopping, on the other hand, requires one to get up and go get what it is they want by themselves.

However, there are some limitations.Online shopping requires waiting for the product to be shipped, while physical shopping allows you to take the product home with you immediately.

Depending on the product and where it is coming from, one cannot rule out the fact that there's going to be a waiting time. In some cases, deliveries are very quick, while in others they can take years.

In the case where the delivery may take too long, I may prefer to walk into some local store to get what I need ASAP.

One disadvantage of online shopping is that what one orders may not be what one receives.

An example is when I ordered a $66 cake to be made, and when we went to get it, it was entirely different from what we ordered. I then had to spend $40 more to fix the cake because it was meant to be for my mother's golden jubilee celebration party. You can imagine the disappointment. In conclusion, my decision to shop online or in person depends on the circumstances and my preferences at that time.

While online shopping has its benefits, such as convenience, a wider selection of products, and the ability to shop anytime and anywhere, physical shopping allows for the opportunity to negotiate prices and offers a more tangible shopping experience. I'd say I prefer physical shopping.
