I’m really grateful for social media at this point in our lives because there’s so much I’ve learnt through it. I love the fact that people are free to share their stories, giving others the opportunity to learn from it and to see signs before they start seeing wonders.

Marriage, judging by people’s experiences, as seen online and in reality, is now more of a humiliation ritual than it is a commitment to love each other for better, for worse. The rate of unsuccessful marriages, is almost the same as that of successful ones but because the unsuccessful marriages, are usually the most eventful, we hear more and more of them.

I was scrolling through TikTok sometime ago, and came across the story of a couple who got divorced a year after their wedding. Apparently, the groom, the bride’s sister, the bridesmaids and groomsmen at the wedding, created a group chat, excluding the bride, where they met up once every month to commit their sexual atrocities. The wife found out after a year, and that’s when the divorce happened. When I heard the story, shock was an understatement of how I felt.

Cheating for me, has always been a deal breaker. It’s one thing I’ll never support, either in marriages or in relationships. And it’s sad to see how fast it’s becoming normalized in this generation. Marriage is for better, for worse? Yes but I’m afraid, one of the worse’ I can’t stand in marriage is cheating. No one who claims to love you, to the point where you guys consented to marriage, would cheat on you no matter the circumstance. Hearing the above story, I felt so bad for the victim. Not only was she cheated on, she was also betrayed by someone who she loved enough to get married to.

This brings me to the other thing that shouldn’t belong in the category of worse, when it comes to marriage - betrayal. I read a book recently, and there was a part where the main character realized she had been lied to all her life, by someone she trusted the most - her husband. She’d been married for over 5years, in need of a child. Only for her to find out that her husband was born impotent and he’d been deceiving her all the while.

Betrayal should be a huge deal breaker in marriages, because I believe that for you to be a spouse to someone, they must trust you completely. They know you have their backs, just as they have yours. And you go ahead to betray their trust? That’s a very scary thing to experience.

I could go on and on, listing so many things that are enough to destroy a marriage, but these two I already mentioned, are irredeemable actions. What type of worse do you think should be enough to end a marriage? Share with us, in the #hive-ghana community.

Thanks for reading.
