Nice. Spinning wool is always fun!

To freeze the subject, you get the sharpest results when you use a flash. But a portrait scanner, or someone very briefly lighting you with a flashlight also works very well albeit with different qualities.

It doesn't matter that you're already slightly lit by the steel wool. It's impossible to stay perfectly still for 10 seconds while you're spinning wool so you'll always be blurry if there's no fast or controlled lighting to "freeze" you.

If you got overexposed results with the flash you may want to try and decrease the intensity of the flash and also use a higher f/stop and lower ISO. If you have a manual lens, changing the aperture during the exposure can also be a way of controlling the brightness of different elements in your shot.
