I'd been wanting to try light painting for quite some time, and had been on the lookout for interesting spots. About a month ago, I stumbled across this mostly-abandoned tunnel in Montreal, and thought it would be a good location. So one Friday evening, I managed to convince my wife to come along and be a model, while playing with fire.
Steel wool is a lot of fun to play with, and lights up the tunnel beautifully. I wish I had shot with a bit of a wider lens to capture more of the sparks hitting the ceiling and floor. It's so hard to compose a shot when everything is pitch dark.
Can anyone offer tips to freeze the subject and eliminate motion blur? These are roughly 10-second exposures. I tried a flash, but the steel wool burns bright enough to illuminate the subject fairly well over 10 seconds, meaning the flash can't freeze a subject like it could if it was pitch dark.
I definitely want to try more of this. I think there are a lot of things that I can improve through experience. And there are endless possibilities to explore.
