I missed #TTT over the Holidays so I guess it was a good thing I posted at least on Christmas song edition slightly early - phew. In 12 months there's another chance to share more favorites.
Today I'll take you on a little journey, maybe a little bit of a wild journey. It started out with me looking through my liked and saved videos on Youtube. Every now and then I hear something and then look it up and when I land on Youtube - one thing (may) lead to another. So, I was looking for this Finnish band that I found a few years ago through a cover song of one of my favorite bands.
This Finnish band plays a ton of instruments and brings them all together in a kind of bluegrass, hillbilly sound which - for the record - I usually like to avoid. But - there are exceptions, and this band is one of them. The band is called Steve'n'Seagulls and this is their cover of The Offspring's *** Self Esteem ***
You should really, really check out their Youtube channel here. There are a lot of cover songs but also their own songs. I did check it out and stumbled across a series they did and in each episode they interviewed and made music with another musician. I happened to stumble into episode 6 which features Tarja Turunen, formerly the lead singer of Nightwish now solo. Tarja is a classically trained soprano and - boy - does her voice have power.
And it sounded oddly familiar... So off I went on a google spree about Tarja and in her greatest hits, I found a title that rang a bell. Back to Youtube and search there for Tarja Turunen and Last Breath and there it was - the song that I knew. The video is kinda meh - IMO - but the song - nice! And quite different from the first stop of today's journey, right? Now I also know that symphonic metal is a thing.
On to the final stop for today. Going back to the first song above I wanted to explain how I actually found Steve'n'Seagulls because I'd never search for , you know, bluegrass. I know that it was somehow related to The Offspring so I started reading through comments on Offspring videos but didn't find it. Mind you there are thousands of comments on their videos - sheesh. So I gave up when I saw an acoustic version of Self Esteem - say what?! Is what I thought and I had to check it out, of course, I love The Offspring.
And just when I was giving up I did one last Google search for the two bands and - bam! I didn't make the connection on Youtube but on the book of face (yeah, I know I'm still on there, inactive 鈽癸笍). The official Offspring page shared Steve'n'Seagull's Self Esteem with their followers and I saw it. Yay me! In case you are on FB here's the link.
