April 15 of HiveBloPoMo and the prompt is - FlashbackFriday - share 3 childhood photos
Alright, here we go - this is perfect! A few years ago, I visited my mom back home in Germany and while looking for a book to read I stumbled across old photo albums. Of course, I couldn't say no to that.
I sat down with mom and we went down memory lane - hard. One album, another album, there were loose photos as well - we had a wonderful time just chatting and reminiscing. I enjoyed it a lot and despite one or two tears, I know my mom did too.
So, I am going to share with you not three but seven photos of my childhood from long, long ago - as you can no doubt tell from the not-restored photos, so don't even try opening them larger.
Here on the right is me at about four showing off that lovely tooth gap and pigtails.
But this photo here is a real gem. The photo of my brother and two sisters and me as a baby was taken in my grandparent's living room. In the background, you can see a budgie. I remember that we used to have a budgie until my early teens. OMG - they escaped so often. I don't remember how but I do remember running with the cage and crying through the fields trying to find and catch Peter, the budgie. The things you remember, right?
Does the tooth gap look familiar? How about those pigtails and braids? Yes, this is me when I was about seven or eight. My mom always insisted on those, she wouldn't let me wear my hair any other way because it was so long and got tangled and apparently I made a tantrum when she wanted to brush it. Hahahaha - you moms out there wouldn't know anything about that, huh?
We used to have a trailer with a tent at a river about an hour's drive away from home. We spent a lot of weekends there fishing and waterskiing and playing e.g. badminton. The bottom photo is from one of our summer vacations in Denmark. I caught that cod! It was too heavy for me but I had my big brother to help me 😜. Mom or more likely dad took the pic because we thought it funny that the fish was almost as big as me.
And last but not least photos from school-age me. On the left about nine or ten during a school photo shoot. At the time, some of my long hair finally got cut off and I was allowed to wear it loose. And then on the right is teenager-me with short hair but totally not the cut I wanted! I wanted a fun modern cut and, I got this 😣.
Anyways, notice something? No braids, pigtails, or toothy smile anymore. Yup, by that time I had learned to hide my bad (looking) teeth. It was only when I was sixteen that my parents had them corrected. I think I was one of the last generations that didn't grow up with braces, although some of the other girls my age had them, we didn't have the money.
But it is all good, these days you might even catch me laughing into a camera, and on the very rare occasion, I might also braid my hair again. I actually do love braiding, I drove my older sisters nuts because I always wanted to braid their long hair - LOL.
Okay, that it's for me. That was a long walk down memory lane. Obviously, none of these photos were taken by me but by one or the other family member.
And with that - I hope you'll have a wonderful (Easter) weekend!
Cheers,
