Technology has brought about a whole lot of advancements in our world today... From a time when messaging a friend or relative that resides in another state or country will take days even up to months to deliver, technology has made it very easy for us to communicate within seconds at a very very cheap rate.
Technology presented the internet, which gave us social media - a nice and amazing place for all sort of things, including communication, entertainment, business, advertisement and all other things. The advantages of social media knows no bounds as it has helped a lot of people in a lot of ways.
Unfortunately, many people take advantage of social media and the Internet in general to do awful things to each other. Scammers thrive in a space where people are innocently trying to connect and meet other people from diverse parts of the world. Arms dealing became easier as the darkweb became a safe ground for such kind of people.
Interestingly, irrespective of the negativities in the social media space and the Internet in general, there are a lot of good people out there who are very genuine and sort out true connections. Friendships are made. Fortunately, these friendships last a long time, some even lead to dating and marriage.
In a space where good people and irresponsible people occupy, beautiful friendships can still blossom between nice people. This post is my entry for hive learners community contest, Online friendships. In this post, I would write about my perspective of online friendships, and I would also share of a friend I met on Facebook.
I have heard a lot of people talk about how they met good relationships in social media or other online platforms. When they describe their stories, I can not relate to it most of the times, but then, I listen to them. Maybe I could get a few lessons from the story they tell.
When I first entered into the world of social media, I didn't take anything serious. I started with 2go back when it was the hottest social media app in town. From there, I migrated to Facebook, then WhatsApp, Twitter now known as X, LinkedIn, telegram, Snapchat and a few other social media. Though I'm not really active in most of these social media apps, I have an account with them.
Initially, I didn't take social media serious. I saw it as a game of chatting. I never believed that the person on the other side was real. To me, it was like talking to Gemini on my phone. So, based on this, I didn't believe that I could ever find quality friends in social media.
The only social media I took serious was 2go because we had an online class group there. Most of my friends were there. The only time I felt like I was chatting with real humans was when I was chatting with my friends. Aside that, I considered everyone else as bots that the app was using to keep it's users company.
Truth be told, even up till date, I don't really like chatting because I probably have a little of that belief. Lol.. it's a superstitious belief that has proven to be difficult to get rid of.
Facebook is the place I chatted the least. Back when I had Facebook installed in my phone, the major reason it was there was to watch reels in my free time, and to check how my old friends are doing. I actually snub a lot on Facebook. I have a lot of chats that I didn't reply to. Majorly because I know the chat will not yield anything productive and it will end up wasting my time.
Though I snub a lot in Facebook, I was still able to get a very good friend from there.
On a good day, I came online to do what I normally do on Facebook (watch reels, and check updates from my old friends). I saw a message notification and I decided to check it out. That's when I saw the many messages waiting for my response. I decided to respond to a few. That's when this girl started chatting me back to back. I had nothing to do, so, I decided to keep the chat going.
We chatted from late morning up till night and we still had something to say. I slept very late that day. We shared pictures, stories, and even numbers. From Facebook, the chat migrate to Whatsapp and we kept going.
Just like couples that started dating newly, we were making calls late in the night. Our energy matched. Though we had diverse interests, we vibed a lot. Our friendship lasted a long time. Even up till date, I do call her every now and then but not as frequently as it was initially.
She invited me to her school's party some time ago, but I could not attend due to I had something else scheduled for that day. Though we met some other time when I went to her school to see their Head Of department. After seeing the person, we met up, and it was actually a nice meet up.
