Division in a mathematical equation is not a problem. It just might be what you need to find the value of X. But division amongst humans, who are regarded as being superior beings, isn't only a problem but a catastrophe in waiting.
LET ME TELL YOU A STORY
Yesterday was basically Election day in the Faculty of the Social Sciences, University of Ibabdan. It was an election day for all departments, as well as the faculty as a whole.. And it gave me soooo much joy to see my course mates( 300level) in mass (about 80%) out to vote- the coolest thing ever!!-
Why is it cool? Because it has never ever happened in the history of our three years as classmates! Yet,this historic day ended with a lot of finger pointing and name calling.
Let me rewind this story 3years so you truly understand and get the background.
3years ago...
We were all freshmen in UI then, smart and cool.. If i do say so myself.. It was all good until segregation began to creep in.
This segregation in my opinion started with the executives of the department choosing 'favourites', cliques being formed such that competition began to find its way info the system of the class.
It got so bad that the class couldn't come together to do anything... Not even to collectively boycott an assignment... hehehe
This didn't improve tho. It got worse in 200level, the class became even more divided.. Cliques broke down and more were created. We never show u for anything; not to vote, not a meeting nor a party.. A party!
We never showed support for anyone or anything.
NB: I'm using 'We' just for the sake of it.. I was very active and havent missed any party or voting exercise (smiles)
Three years down the lane we are know amongst lecturers as the class with great potential but highly divided.. So much so that our Social Psychology Lecturer conducted an exercise to help promote group cohesiveness about a week ago ( that is how bad it got).
The result of the exercise is the large turn out at the election yesterday. But you cant just sweep under the rug the pieces the division had broken.
Yesterday..
The best candidates lost the election yesterday not because they were not competed but because they were from the 300evel class. 200level students refused to vote for them because the 300level class didnt show them support when they needed it and rather support people from their class.
Even amongst people from my class that came to vote, there were still people that went against the class decisions.
Although I am refraining from saying to them 'I told you so'.... I did tell them so!
You reap what you sow. A divided house would one day collapse on the heads that live in it.
You do not need division or competition where there can be peace. It doesn't make you are 'bigger person'.
I am glad they are begining to realise this things and I hope it get better from here on.
We see these things everywhere but wouldnt rather promote peace and stick together as a team. Envy jealousy destroys. Don't wait 3years for Karma to bite you in the ass.
Stay woke!
