Here we are, folks – it's that time again. 
We live in a neighborhood that is pretty densely packed with kids, so we get a fairly large volume of trick-or-treaters coming through. During the height of COVID, we didn't get much traffic, so we assumed it was just going to be that way around here. But, boy, were we wrong! You see, we moved in here just after Halloween in 2019 before the coronavirus outbreak, so up until last year, we really hadn't experienced a "normal" Halloween in this house.
So, last year, we went to the store and bought two bulk bags of candy, thinking, 'Well, this should be enough.' As soon as the kids hit the street, it was sheer madness. I couldn't have imagined how many kids would show up; they were out in full force! Both large bags of candy were nearly completely gone within the first hour. My buddy Alex manned the candy station while I quickly hopped into the car and ran over to the store to get some more. That turned out to be a near disaster because all of the good stuff was completely gone, leaving only bags of items that might get your house egged, like Mounds and Almond Joy. Then, I turned around and saw a couple of big bags hiding under some random pile of hats and clothes that got misplaced on another shelf. 'YES!' I exclaimed.
I got back to the house just in time before the last of the candy was gone and replenished the supply. The night was saved! Of course, all of that candy was wiped out before the night was through. And that's why this year, I went to Costco and bought about five giant bags of assorted candy. Hopefully, we'll be good this year! It has to be because I'm not leaving the house tonight. It's a real pain to drive out of the neighborhood with so many people walking around and kids bolting out into the street.
When we first decided that we were going to be giving out a lot of candy, we encountered a bit of a conundrum. We wanted to pass out candy, but no one wanted to sit outside on the driveway. The living room is upstairs, leading out to a balcony just above the garage.
We came up with the idea to attach a rope to a bucket, which could be lowered down with a pulley system to deliver candy to the kids. This way, we could all hang out on the balcony and still distribute plenty of candy. We also placed a handbell on a small table with a sign that reads 'Ring for Treats.' So when we hear the bell, we walk over and lower the bucket full of candy. The kids in the neighborhood really seem to enjoy this setup.
We're all set and ready to go, but a touch of pre-Halloween cleanup is in order. We've formed a nice tradition of inviting the same group of friends over each year, gradually expanding the circle with a few more guests, making it all the more enjoyable.
