This is one of those animated tv shows wherein the main character is so unbelievably clueless in a funny way that you start feeling sorry for him, Captain Fall is just that. I went into this expecting another random Netflix animated comedy or something like Bojack Horseman, which I found boring by the way, that I'd probably watch for an episode or two and forget about, Captain fall was really dope, it had me binge watching the whole show in like a day, Lol!
The basic story is ridiculous and it is that the main character Jonathan Fall is a socially awkward, extremely gullible man who somehow gets the opportunity to become captain of a luxury cruise ship. This was major for him because he was literally the worst of all the captains in his class. Sounds like the beginning of his dream, right? Well… not exactly, the ship is actually being used for an enormous criminal operation, and Jonathan has absolutely no idea what's happening around him.
The people running the operation basically see him as the perfect person to take the blame if everything goes wrong. Netflix describes him as a gullible captain who becomes the “fall guy” for an illicit smuggling operation, and honestly, that description tells you almost everything you need to know. The hint is even in the name “Captain Fall”
What makes the jonathan fall character so funny is that he isn't some secretly intelligent character pretending to be stupid. No, this man genuinely does not understand what is happening. Everybody around him can see the obvious warning signs, while Jonathan is walking around believing he's finally being respected by people who actually care about him and the show found a way to make this incredibly funny.
The supporting characters are where a lot of the chaos comes from. You've got Liza, Tanner, Mr. Tyrant and Agent Steel, all bringing completely different types of insanity to the story.
I also think the biggest thing you need to know about Captain Fall is that this is not a wholesome cartoon you casually put on while eating dinner with the family. It is very much adult animation, with dark humor, crude jokes and mature themes. The comedy constantly pushes into uncomfortable territory, and whether you find that hilarious or annoying will probably determine whether you enjoy the show.
There are moments where I was genuinely laughing because the situation was so absurd. Then there were other moments where I was sitting there thinking, “Okay… was that actually supposed to be funny?” Still, the way the show develops makes its addictive.
What I particularly enjoyed was watching Jonathan slowly become more important to the people around him without really understanding why. He's not the smartest person in the room, he's probably not even the second-smartest, 😂 but he has something that most of the other characters don', he's genuinely kind-hearted.
Almost everyone around Jonathan is manipulating somebody, even jonathans parents are not exempt, everyone is hiding something or trying to get something from someone. Jonathan, meanwhile, is just happy that people are finally talking to him.
Captain Fall is weird in a good way, dark, ridiculous and hilarious, that being said Jonathan Fall might genuinely be the last person on Earth I would trust to captain a cruise ship which, ironically, is exactly why he's the perfect captain for this show.
