That makes a lot of sense. I teach Unity these days actually, and do find C# a good deal more accessible than C++.
C++ code can be simple and intuitive, but there are plenty of features that can help developers making things needlessly complicated ;).
Lastly, from personal experience, I remember there being a major governance scandal back in 2018 when Eos was first booming. Perhaps that may have to do with its lack of popularity?
