My only consolation thus far is that the current US administration and most of the Western leaders are at least being very cautious and deliberate in not responding with military action. So at least in that they're not compounding their earlier mistakes, specifically those of interfering with Ukraine's political upheaval in 2014 or courting Ukraine for NATO membership (IMO both a big part of why Putin acted now and as he did). If you push a 'rational crook' like Putin in a corner or no-win situation without an 'out' then this is the kind of stuff that happens (much like Saddam before he invaded Kuwait). So while Putin is 100% responsible for the war he started, some of the Western policy makers (especially the US neocons) share responsibility for creating a favorable environment for it to happen. The latter doesn't necessarily change how we deal with Putin going forward, except in that we make sure we don't have the same people who helped make this mess come about be the same ones we trust to 'fix' it going forward.

Sadly some of the sanctions are either overboard or badly targeted, and are disproportionately hurting Russian civilians & businesses that have nothing to do with the war. "When goods don't cross borders, soldiers will" and so on. That and this blanket demonization I'm seeing in US media of everything "Russian" (instead of Putin specifically) is starting to go to a very dark place. Lastly, there's the economic blowback it has on the country in which I live; at minimum it's going to mess with inflation and supply chains in Mongolia, and it's even possible the sanctions will end up cutting off energy supplies AND food deliveries. So now we're in the position of getting prepared to leave here on short notice if the latter comes about... 😟
