A few years ago, a colleague of mine, whose job was entirely focused on free speech spoke to me in the lobby of our office and said "I wish I could say what you do."
That was telling, first of all, that a person whose job is to promote free speech can't speak freely. But, the reality is that, I can't say what I say. I have lost tens of thousands of dollars for defending free speech. Yes, I'm the guy who's going to step in and say, "Yeah, Richard Spencer in a douchebag; but, he has a right to speak. If you don't like it, don't listen or debate him. Don't smash windows." Apparently, that's controversial.
Here's the thing: I won't lie. I would dare to say that anybody who isn't a free speech absolutist is a liar to some extent. We all have our controversial opinions. Some are right. Most are wrong. Some are grossly wrong. But, to be against free speech in any way is to just demand that people lie about the thoughts that pop into their heads.
And yes, I mean "In any way."
Opposition to free speech is just institutional lying.
