It is my belief that steem can only go mainstream if we simplify the login in process and the challenges faced in getting a steem account. Separating certain features like one's wallet and their social page might be a way to achieve this. Sometime last year there were talks about a steem light account. Didn't get so much into the details of it but I think it entails creating an account that can perform various social features of the steem account without having a wallet to it. I believe initiatives like this can reduce the security features that mandate account holders having several to a simple and more familiar login option.
