If you live in the Ethereum world, you already carry a wallet everywhere: MetaMask. What you probably do not have is a Hive account, because trying a new chain usually means a new seed phrase, a new key manager and a new thing to back up.
With the Hive snap for MetaMask, you can skip all of that. Your existing MetaMask wallet derives and holds Hive keys and MetaMask signs Hive transactions the same way it signs Ethereum ones: a prompt pops up, you approve, done. This guide walks through both paths, creating a brand new Hive account with MetaMask and logging in to Ecency with one you already made.
MetaMask Snaps are small, permissioned extensions that run inside MetaMask and teach it new chains. The Hive snap is published on npm as @hiveio/metamask-snap. When Ecency requests it, MetaMask shows a standard install prompt listing exactly what the snap can do. Approve it once and it stays installed.
One version note worth knowing: Ecency's login relies on signing behavior added in snap version 1.7.0, so it requests 1.7.0 or newer. A fresh install always gets a current version. If you have an older copy from earlier experiments, MetaMask will prompt you to update and if that somehow fails, Ecency stops with a clear "update the Hive snap" message instead of a cryptic error.
Go to ecency.com/signup/wallet.
Pick a username. Availability is checked live and this name becomes your permanent Hive identity, so choose one you want to keep.
Connect MetaMask and approve the Hive snap install when prompted.
Sign one message to verify the wallet is yours.
Ecency creates the Hive account for you, for free.
There is no new seed phrase in this flow. Your Hive keys are derived from the MetaMask wallet you already back up.
Open ecency.com and hit Login.
Type your Hive username.
Click "Sign with MetaMask". The button shows up automatically when MetaMask is detected in your browser.
Approve the signature in MetaMask.
Under the hood, Ecency connects to the snap, reads your Hive public key, checks that it matches the account on chain, then asks the snap to sign a login challenge. If you see a key mismatch error, you are in a different MetaMask wallet than the one used at signup. Switch to the right wallet or browser profile and retry.
Wallet logins on many platforms are view-only or limited to social actions. The Hive snap is not. It signs every Hive authority level, so a MetaMask login gives you complete control of the account:
Social actions: publish posts, comment, vote, follow, post to Waves.
Wallet actions: transfer HIVE and HBD, power up, delegate, vote for witnesses.
Each sensitive action is its own MetaMask approval, so nothing moves without you confirming it. There is no separate "upgrade" step to unlock wallet features. One wallet, whole account.
Key derivation is deterministic: the same MetaMask wallet always produces the same Hive keys. That means your MetaMask Secret Recovery Phrase is also the backup for your Hive access. Restore MetaMask from that phrase on a new machine, reinstall the snap and your Hive login works again.
Ecency never sees your private keys. Signing happens inside MetaMask and the app only ever handles public keys and signatures. The flip side is the usual self-custody rule: guard your Secret Recovery Phrase, because it now protects your Hive identity too.
You can add MetaMask to an existing account from the external wallet setup in the Ecency wallet. Connect MetaMask, install the snap and authorize adding the snap-derived keys to your account. Authorizing that change requires an owner key signature once, since it edits the account's key set. After that, MetaMask login works alongside your existing keys, which stay valid.
Three causes cover almost every failure:
MetaMask is locked. Unlock it and try again.
The snap is outdated. Accept the update prompt, or remove and reinstall the Hive snap from MetaMask's snap settings.
Wrong wallet. The snap derives keys per wallet, so a different Secret Recovery Phrase means different Hive keys. Check which wallet and browser profile you are in.
Hive is a social blockchain with over a decade of history: blogging, communities, short-form Waves and rewards paid to authors and curators, all on chain and without ads on your content. For an Ethereum user the barrier was never interest, it was key management. The snap removes that barrier. You keep the wallet you trust and you get an account no platform can take away.
