I have had a few people ask how they can rank better in the POB WOTW and I find it interesting that people are genuinely interested in improving their creative process. I have been doing so myself (although it can be very tasking for someone who churns out posts every day). So in this post, I will be sharing practical and subjective tips on how you improve your score.
The POB WOTW contest challenges creators to come up with decent posts, however, this is just an aspect of the challenge. The grading system created by @calumam is quite robust and covers different aspects of creating a post many do not even take into cognizance (including myself).
Below are some useful tips that can help you rank better:
DON'T BE BORING.
This is quite subjective but I would advise that you're in your best mood while writing your entry for the week. It reflects in the tone of your post which will help you earn more points under the 'entertaining' category (probably the easiest points you can earn).
PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR TITLE
This is probably one of the easiest ways to earn points. Titles are important and you should take out time to come up with something interesting. Generic titles will often earn you a point or two, which can possibly affect your overall ranking.
MAKE AS MANY IMPORTANT POINTS AS POSSIBLE
The top-ranking posts are usually very insightful. The authors take time to emphasize their points with examples, which gives substance to their posts.
I often see a lot of lazy writing which is quite unfortunate and disappointing. It is quite easy to spot a low-effort post. They are usually very short and in the case where they are long, they are badly constructed.
If you have an idea you want to develop, a 30minutes trip to YouTube will arm you with all the information you need. A well-researched post will always score higher. This doesn't mean we don't reward ingenuity, both can be combined effectively and I have seen a lot of author do this
GET FEEDBACK
You're not writing for the curators/graders. I am sorry to disappoint you if you thought otherwise. Getting engagement on your entry is equally important. So it is advisable to promote/share your post. It is going to matter a lot more soon.
PERSONIFY YOUR CONTENT
In layman’s terms, rather than telling people what to do, tell them what you do. You might not be an authority on a subject but your personal views and experiences are valuable--even more valuable than the other information you hope to convey.
For instance, I am certainly not interested in someone telling me what happiness is or is not. However, I will be more curious about what it means to them. This provides a unique insight into their life and offers a connection.
FORMATTING
This is by far the hardest part of creating content. I don't even pay so much attention to it. However, it can play an important part in how your content is received and perceived.
There are a lot of beautiful things you can do with Markdowns. I learnt a few from calumam which I use every time I post. For example, text-justified, subs, etc.
THINK OUTSIDE THE BOX.
This is quite difficult for many individuals and I understand why but if you dwell on the theme you can come up with something unique. Also, try different styles of writing.
I remember one of my entries before I started grading was a contest. Probably not something many would consider. I titled it the 'contest in a contest' and it did well during that week.
So always try out new things, you don't know what will click. Be flexible with your creative process.
PERSONALIZE PHOTO
I know we are accustomed to taking pictures from the internet but I will suggest taking your own pictures if you have a decent camera. In most cases, it helps establish your points better.
If you have to take your pictures from the internet I will suggest you carefully select an image that conveys your message. It is a lot of work ( and might seem needless) but it will earn you a few points.
BE YOURSELF
There is no need to pander to my needs. Be your true authentic self and represent your thoughts and ideas as vividly as you can. Be your own critic as well. Have internal dialogues with yourself and find ways to improve. I wrote a post earlier today on this issue, you can check it out as well.
So these are my tips. I hope to see more entries this week and new entrants at the top. Cheers
