Sweetest Habit, a novel that explores the changes in society and sexuality through the story of the prostitute Rosa. (ENG/ESP)
Good evening, blogging friends, how are you? Here I am again, reviewing the latest book I read. These evenings I'm often tired and fall asleep almost immediately after a few pages, but this book truly struck me and kept me awake longer than it should have, so much so that I've already added other books by the same author to my list. Alberto Schiavone, whom I shamefully didn't know despite being famous in the literary world, is now known to me, too, thanks to this book I picked up by chance! But let's talk about the book. It begins with Piera, an aging woman who goes to the funeral of her last client. But Piera hasn't been Piera all her life; in fact, since she was a teenager, she's been Rosa, a prostitute. One could almost call it a coming-of-age novel, for it tells the story of Rosa and how her career as a prostitute begins and ends, how, as the daughter of a mother who was also a prostitute, the comings and goings of men in the house are natural for her, how, even as a child, her mother spies on her secret encounters, slowly instructing her in the arts of love until puberty. But her relationship with her mother remains ambiguous, even cruel. Her mother has carved out for her a destiny as a beautiful but stupid girl who can only prostitute herself, while for her sister she has created a destiny of study and privilege. Perhaps because Rosa resembles her mother, she is the most oppressed. Her mother demands too much of her, and their relationship becomes tangled in love and hate, in competition and even in intense anger when Rosa decides she wants a normal life, not a life as a prostitute.
Meanwhile, Rosa grows up, becoming more and more beautiful, increasingly desired, but also, as is fitting, a young girl wielding a power she doesn't understand and, above all, with the feelings of a normal young girl who, in addition to professional sex, desperately wants and demands the love she's never been given. When she meets him, she makes two terrible mistakes: getting pregnant and trusting men. She's sent elsewhere to give birth, and a man in the armed forces, a client of hers and her mother's, decides to adopt her child, depriving Rosa of the only real, unconditional love she could have given and received. Rosa, full of rage but aware of her beauty and her skills as a lover, abandons her mother. After various vicissitudes and shady dealings, a journey through squalor, around drug addicts (and she fears drugs more than a dragon), the death of a colleague, the risks of the profession, and the various clients and pimps who follow one another in her life and in her bed, Rosa begins to get smart and build a career. The oldest career in the world that slowly brings her a lot of money, increasingly wealthy clients, no holidays or sick leave and obviously constant attention to her appearance, Rosa's life becomes a life dedicated to her career, morally questionable but well-paid.
Despite her money, her properties, her friends, her wealthy and otherwise clients, Rosa always lacks something—her son, whom she observes from afar, just as she observes, understands, and consoles every client who comes to her, from the humblest to the richest, from the youngest to the oldest, some as loyal as if they were a neighborhood shop. But time passes for everyone, times change, and it's hard to remain a star in prostitution when so much young competition, social media, and porn arrive. This book doesn't just tell Rosa's story, but also the story of a changing society, of the female figure, of sexuality, of the economy, of men and women, of customs and habits, and of course, of the protagonist herself, who will experience not only external changes but also internal ones, made up of a life without love but ultimately truly empty? Or did every client who didn't abandon her ultimately give her a certain kind of love? This book, albeit lightly, addresses and analyzes various themes both of the protagonist's interiority and of the change in society from many aspects, I found it very well written, flowing but at the same time profound and it seems a paradox but also a mix of vulgarity and delicacy, it is one of those books to which I would give top marks without a doubt!
