Remote Work Is Great, But What Happens to the Corporate World?
People are slowly moving to remote jobs, having offices just in their homes. I visited my elder brother two weeks ago, and he told me that he wants to resign from his well-paid job with so many benefits for a remote job. I thought he was joking, but he meant his words, complaining of stress, traffic, his health, and more. He was like, if he can also get a well-paid remote job, then why the stress?
I am sure a lot of people are also having the same thought, and I can only imagine what we become of the corporate world in the long run. If more people choose to work remotely due to how economical it is, who then will do those jobs that really need to be done in the office rather than from home?
There are many things surrounding physical jobs, two to three hours of traffic going and the same coming back home. The fuel, or the transport fare, and the stress and energy being consumed on the road. Getting home, there is no more energy left to take care of homes and family; it's not easy, and that's why remote jobs are becoming so attractive these days—it's easier and more convenient.
But then, what happens to the corporate world if many firms begin to allow staff to work from home? Before you know it, companies will be looking out for smaller spaces, maybe for meetings occasionally, because traditional offices will take a different shape, and this could also mean that the usual expenses companies run in offices will be reduced.
However, not all jobs can be done from home. The likes of doctors, dentists, mechanics, security men, hairdressers, etc., have work that demands that they leave their homes and render services to people in need of them. So you see, if remote jobs continue growing this way, I wonder how the society can navigate through the challenge, and then, again, what about the business around traditional offices? the staff, what happens to their jobs? Those are the ones selling breakfast to office workers, the cleaners, transporters, etc.
If most of the office workers stop going to offices, these businesses will definitely also feel the impact. Remote work is actually amazing, but I personally think that the future may not be completely remote or completely physical. Perhaps it will look more like hybrid work, alternating the days people go to the office and work from home, because at the end of the day, humans still need human interaction, and most times, sitting together one-on-one to discuss certain things birth new ideas and makes a difference.
The only thing giving me concern is how the corporate world, businesses, and even our cities will adapt if working from home becomes the new normal. But hopefully, hybrid work comes to stay when we realize that indeed, we still have physical services in different sectors in our society .
