Life is a choice normally. People make decisions about what they want to take inside their bodies or not. I have interacted with some mothers who don't allow any nurse to give vaccines to their children even for free. They have their different reasons, and for some people, it's simply their belief.
I also have met a mom who said she would rather die than have her baby through surgery; she can never sign the document for her to be operated on. Choices are different indeed; some baffle me, I must say. But there is nothing anyone can do about some of these human choices as long as they're not affecting another person.
Over the years, we have heard a lot of this popular saying that prevention is better than cure. It sounds very simple, but at times, it becomes controversial in different contexts. You know, sometimes, the preventive care we are all encouraged to observe might not be for personal benefits only but for others as well.
When it comes to vaccinating our kids, mothers take the decision because we feel we know what is good for them. Personally, there are some vaccines I declined that my kids won't take sometimes last year when their school informed parents about it. I had my reason; normally, I love vaccinating my kids because of its health benefits. In fact, I make sure they don't miss any of their stipulated vaccines from 0 to 5 years old and keep the documents saved, but in a few cases, when a particular vaccine is not clear to me, I object.
However, if it's for a vaccine that, when I don't take it, I could infect others with, I don't think I should risk any life for my personal reasons or beliefs, and I think anyone that intentionally does that should be made to know that his or her freedom of choice can cross into public risk.
It's understandable when people reject vaccines due to fear or ignorance, but when it's about belief and the actions could risk another life, then it's a big concern.
I really find it difficult to totally support the idea that people should be allowed to decide their stance on some important preventive vaccine when the aftereffects can affect the public. Again, it can be quite understandable for asking someone to do what he is not comfortable doing. No adult loves to be controlled for any reason; everyone has a right to certain things and should be allowed to exercise it, and forcing a vaccine is like invading into the person's private life, but then, where do we draw the line?
I feel it is all about finding balance. Adequate education about this vaccine should be embraced instead of enforcing any one. When people are well informed about the risks of rejecting a particular vaccine and the benefits involved too, there will be a lot of shifts in their mindset to a certain extent.
People have died a careless death due to lack of vaccine; on the other hand, people suffered due to ignorance over this subject too.
Overall, prevention will always be a better choice when people are well informed, not just for self-benefit but for everyone around us.
