Do you remember hearing the roar of a lion at the beginning of an episode while watching Tom and Jerry as a child? Different logos appear at the beginning of different Hollywood movies, cartoons or animated films. One of the logos is the MGM or Metro Goldwyn Mayer (Metro Goldwyn Mayer; once the largest, most attractive and respected studio) studio in the middle of the circular logo. So today I will talk about this logo of the roaring lion.
In 1924, publisher Howard Diaz-Samuel designed the "Leo the Lion" logo for the Goldwine Pictures Corporation. He created the logo based on the athletic team at his alma mater Columbia University, Lions. When Goldwine Pictures merged with Metro Picture Corporation and Louis B. Mayer Picture, the newly formed MGM held the logo. Since then, five lions have been playing the role of "Leo Singh". The first was called Strips, which was published at the opening of MGM's silent movies from 1924 to 1928.
Jackie was the second lion in the MGM logo. Jackie was the first to roar as MGM's logo, which was MGM's first sound production recorded with a gramophone. Jackie roars 3 times before looking to the right of the screen. This lion named Jackie was seen in all the black and white movies made by MGM from 1928 to 1956. While the movies were silent, the logo of Jackie's famous grill-roar sequence appeared on the screen and played on the phonograph. Jackie was the first lion to appear in Technicolor in 1924.
Jackie is also known for surviving various accidents. These include the destruction of two trains, an earthquake and the explosion of a studio. But the most talked about accident was when an airliner landed in an Arizona forest due to the risk of a plane crash. For four days, Jackie survived by drinking a little water and a few sandwiches. For these reasons, he was nicknamed "Leo the Lucky".
The third and probably most famous lion was Tanner (although Jackie was still used for MGM black and white films at the same time). The lion was used in the logo from 1943-1957. The fourth lion was used from 1958-1957, but the lion had no name. MGM Studios later chose Leo as the fifth and last lion, which has been used till now since 1958. This was the history of MGM's logo!
