I remember from school that the Magna Carta took place in the year 1215. However, I cannot even remember what it was or where it took place. I’m not sure why the year ended up pounded into my brain. I remember that the Steema Carta was created by aggroed, a Steem Witness and Co-Founder of Splinterlands. The Steema Carta’s intent was to keep the Steem blockchain secure from a potential threat.
Let’s back up a little to understand why the Steema Carta was necessary. It was on Valentine’s Day exactly two years ago that the announcement was made that eccentric crypto billionaire Justin Sun had purchased Steemit and a humongous share of Steem.
Justin had worked out the deal with the CEO of Steemit, Ned. Steemit users knew him as the charismatic CEO with perfect hair. The only problem was that those shares Justin purchased were intended for use by the community. They were never intended to be powered up and used for voting.
There was immediately tension between Justin and the witnesses / whales. This led to a standoff in which the witnesses of Steem said they were suspicious of Justin’s intentions. There were many rumors. One for example was that Justin intended to transfer Steemit to the Tron blockchain. Under the Steema Carta, Justin was forked out of his shares by the witnesses until his intentions were clear.
The Steema Carta failed because Binance helped out Justin by powering up Steem from user funds on their exchange. So one morning we all woke up and the top 20 witnesses were all sock pockets owned by Justin. This is what led to the Steem fork and the creation of the Hive blockchain that we are all using today.
