The leaves do fall off in autumn and the plant goes dormant but cold freezes the caudex and causes rot.
We usually only see mushrooms at my place for about 2-3 months in summer when it rains a lot but there isn't a huge variety. My favourite are these that I find in December. Clathrus transvaalensis, Stinkhorn family
