"TEN MINUTES"
Flyer designed by me
We make decisions everyday as we journey through life. Fast forward to the present, some of these decisions that we've made in the past has made us have regrets and we only wish we have that super power of rewinding back to the past just to make things right.
if I had the opportunity to travel back to the past for ten minutes, I would correct my onetime unusual careless kitchen attitude.
It happened in the year 2019, precisely in the month of May, that's about 3 years now. I made a big mistake that would have cost my immediate younger brother to loose his right eye or disfigure his forehead. So at home, we normally work with the kitchen timetable made by mum. It was a Wednesday, and since we normally have potatoes for dinner every Wednesday evening, I had this feeling that there was no need of me rushing back home from work to make dinner since cooking potatoes doesn't take much time. I see it as a fast food actually, except I want to fry or do some other potato paparazzi.
So after work, I went for a hangout with my co-workers. We had so much fun gisting, eating and drinking and before I knew it my time was already far spent to how I had it all planned out.
A few minutes past 7pm?馃槼
I hurriedly got into a bus and headed home and immediately started peeling the potatoes. After I was done peeling, washing, cutting and putting the pot of potatoes on the cooker, I was a bit relieved as soon as I discovered that no one was even around at home to notice that I started cooking late. But just few minutes after everything was in order, my dad came home. My Dad do not like late night cooking in the house and always frowns at it when I do this with no tangible reasons so as soon as I noticed he was back I quickly checked what I was cooking and I was glad it was almost ready as this would lessen his anger.
Finally, my potato was done and it was time for me to sieve and pour the hot water away. Normally, I would have poured the hot water away through the kitchen sink after sieving, but I made an unusual choice of pouring the hot water outside, just in front of the kitchen.
It was already night, everywhere was so dark and there was no NEPA light too. I had my Nokia phone torch to see and the light was so faint too. I didn't even know what I was even thinking at that moment, seriously!
With my Nokia phone positioned firmly in my mouth to be able to see light from the torch, I carried the bowl of hot water with my two hands and without paying attention to footsteps or anyone that could be coming at that moment, I poured the hot water with the speed of light. And immediately someone screamed so loud in pains.. it was then it dawned on me that I had emptied a full bowl of hot water on my brother's head. I was shocked and felt like the world has ended for my dear brother. I rushed to where he was with a bowl of cold water and started pouring it immediately on his head while he rubbed his forehead with his palms. oh! it worsened the whole issue.. And if not that the eyes always has a way of escaping harm, his right eye would have been affected too.
I immediately rushed to my dad's room in tears to inform him about the incident, he rushed out to where he was with me. He brought raw egg from the kitchen and as he was about pouring it on his forehead, he noticed that the wound has been badly bruised due to the cold water I poured on him and the friction he applied to the wound while rubbing it. The raw egg was no longer needed anymore because the wound became so bruised. If only my reasoning was in order, pouring a raw egg on his forehead should have been the first treatment to give him to calm the injury a bit but I lacked coordination at that time. Anyways, he was later treated with penicillin ointment and blue seal vaseline and it really helped to heal the wound very fast.
This very day was a very terrible day for me. I cried my eyes out. I remember going to his room countless times that night just to check if the pains he was feeling has subsided. My brother was in so much pains and I felt very bad that I was the reason he was in such a terrible condition. *If only I came back home early to cook.. If only I had done the right thing by pouring the hot water through the sink.. If only I was very careful enough while pouring the hot water outside.. Many if only's!
Thank God my mistake did not cost my brother's right eye, neither did it disfigure his forehead.. Hardly would you notice that he had such a big injury on his forehead because the scar is not even very visible.
My unsual careless kitchen attitude happened just within few minutes, but if I would be given just 10 minutes, I wouldn't mind taking my time to walk down the steps of the kitchen, lower my hands to ground and slowly pour the hot water to avoid the ugly incident that happened that very night.
