It's a long road, there is no turning back ... On a hill on Dartmoor, with the road stretching into the wilderness. Cold day, but bracing - the sun it out.
Several hundred year old granite wall, in an old Devon village in the Teign Valley. You don't find many left like this!
Eyes to the sky, just in time to capture this bird of prey circling high overhead and crossing the moon. Clear blue winter sky brings fresh air and great sights, when we are brave enough to venture out of the house.
The shadows are a giveaway to the sun being low in the sky, as in the short English winter days it is dark by 4-5pm in the thick of it. The light is ethereal tho, when the sun is out. Might be a frost tonight, without clouds to keep any heat in ...
In the woods, the trees are hibernating for winter. Every leaf has fallen, they stand like bare skeletons, alive, waiting for Spring to come around. Looking straight up, we get this interesting visual ... like fractals
Along the river, the water runs high and fast from winter rainfall. The trees, again, all bare, give a very different visual appeal and beauty when compared to the richness of summer greenery ... bleak, yet beautiful all the same.
Freshly sliced log, cut down as I believe it was causing some issues or about to fall down by itself, in a Church graveyard.
A not so freshly cut log, this one having a lot of interesting fungal growth, which lives on the dead wood and removes it for the benefit of all the other trees around ....
Last Winter in Devon ...
It was February, a period of particularly bad weather (rains, wind, cold) had been going on, and suddenly, there were clear blue skies and sunlight. Still cold, bracing, maybe 8 degrees or centigrade. Yet on a day like this, with no weather fronts forecast for days, we can get up into the wilderness for a walk about. Not too long mind, come mid-afternoon darkness won't be far away, and with it cold temperatures you wouldn't want to be stuck out in without a very good tent and warm sleeping bag. These are some of the images I caught in a very sunny winter week last Feb (21) whilst I was still back in the UK.
Thanks for viewing!
Hope you enjoyed this slice of nature from the place I grew up, Southwest Devon, England. Considered one of the wildest and most beautiful parts of the UK.
