Last year one of the most anticipated big screen adaptations of recent times was released by fans of science fiction literature, since it is a colossal work that is considered by many to be the best novel of the genre. . His previous adaptation, which was directed by the renowned filmmaker David Lynch, which although it has become a cult film for some, did not achieve considerable success at the time. Also, today with all the advances in special effects that creators have at their disposal, it stands to reason that the time has come to adapt this space epic, which took place on March 18, 2019 in Budapest, with the start of filming of this super production, whose fruit would be screened (after a year of delay) on September 3, 2021 at the Venice Film Festival and 12 days later in theaters internationally, although in the US it did not arrive until October 22 of the same year.
In this case the direction is in charge of the Canadian Denis Villeneuve, who thanks to his two directly previous works (The Arrival and Blade Runner 2049), has become one of the most acclaimed directors of the science fiction genre in recent years. . But not only is the director's chair occupied by a superstar in his field, but the cast contains a dream level of acting, with the presence of Timothée Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Zendaya, Dave Bautista, Jason Momoa and Javier Bardem, among other great talents. As for the special effects, which are of paramount importance in this production, the responsibility falls into the hands of Paul Lambert and Gerd Nefzer, both Oscar winners in this area. If we add to that that the feature film had a budget of 165 million dollars (not including promotional expenses), we can only hope that it will be a great success.
However, it is well known by the film industry that it is one of the most complicated literary works to adapt to the screen, due to the extravagant scale of the events it narrates and the large number of elements involved in the story. . The saga of books originally comprises 6 novels written by Frank Herbert, to which two others written by Brian Herbert (son of the original author) and Kevin J. Anderson were later added, this as a conclusion to the main saga, but there is also a series of prequels written by these last two authors. Therefore, there is an extensive amount of material that can be used to adapt it to the cinema, so much so that this film only corresponds to the first part of the initial book, for which the production of a second part is certain and very possibly build a franchise with multiple movies and even series; It is already known that a series for HBO Max is in development as a prequel on the theme of the Bene Gesserit Brotherhood, which will be called Dune: The Sisterhood.
Argumento (Posibles spoilers menores)
Plot (possible minor spoilers)
The story, as I already mentioned, has an enormous magnitude, encompassing interstellar dimensions, the narration revolves around Paul Atreides, the character played by Timothée Chalamet, who is the eldest son and heir of Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Isaac), leader of House Atreides. from the planet Caladan; one of the Great Houses that are part of the Landsraad, a political organization ruled by House Corrino, which is holder of the imperial throne. House Atreides is designated by the emperor to exercise the administration of a planet called Arrakis, also known as Dune due to its desert landscapes, in which a substance known as spice is produced, which serves as fuel for the interstellar travel and is also a powerful hallucinogen, which can even give some humans the ability to precognition.
Until now, the Harkonnen House had been in charge of the riches that the planet Dune houses, with which this house managed to become extremely powerful, so, by displacing it from the control of the Spice, which is the most precious and influential resource of the entire known universe; the emperor laid the groundwork for a conflict of powers that would weaken both clans. In Arrakis lives a people known as the Fremen, who have adapted to the adverse conditions of that world and live with sandworms, a dangerous animal species whose individuals have a gigantic size of up to 400 meters in length, which move inside the dunes, coming to the surface to devour everything in its path, making it difficult to extract the precious mineral, which by the way is produced by the larvae of these same worms.
The Fremen have long been oppressed by the Harkonnens and the empire in general due to their exploitation of the wealth their planet possesses, which makes them very suspicious and skeptical of outsiders. However, their beliefs have been shaped by the Bene Gesserit Brotherhood, a mystical matriarchal order made up of women trained to possess special abilities, such as telekinesis, whose purpose is to exert political and social control indirectly through religion. espionage and diplomacy. The organization has been in charge of implanting legends among these populations, which presage the arrival of a kind of messianic chosen one, the Kwisatz Haderach, a Bene Gesserit baron with extraordinary powers, capable of seeing the future and accessing male memories, that cannot be read by Reverend Mothers.
Paul Atreides's mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), is a member of the Bene Gesserit order and was assigned by this organization to become Duke Leto Atreides's concubine and father a female daughter with him, as these women have the ability to determine the sex of their offspring at will. However, she sincerely fell in love with the Duke and contrary to the will of the brotherhood, she procreated a baron, as Leto wished. Later, she educated this child with the techniques of Bene Gesserit wisdom, since she harbored the hope that her son would end up being the Kwisatz Haderach.
Review
As you can see after the summary I just made, the story involves various mythological and sociopolitical elements, which give a fairly deep context to the unfolding of events, which is difficult to capture in a feature film without making it tedious and intricate. , but if the path of oversimplifying the background of the narrative is taken, the essence of the original material would be lost, this is what makes this saga of books almost inadaptable cinematographically. Therefore, it is necessary to take all this into account when evaluating the result that we find when we see this film.
I mainly believe that this film has two main factors that define it beyond the quality of the script and the performances of the cast, I am referring to its visual aesthetics and the music selected for its soundtrack. On the one hand, there are the special effects that introduce us to these worlds in an impeccable way, in particular the planet Arrakis with its endless dunes crossed by giant worms, making the different scenarios result in spectacular images, the costume design is also more that correct and photography is simply magnificent. Personally, how imposing all the ships are completely captivated me, I also thought the design of the so-called thopters was great and of course, also the worms with their impressive jaws full of teeth.
On the other hand, there is the music that makes up the soundtrack, I think that, although it could be a bit strident, it manages to give the scenes an extraordinary solemnity and magnificence, which immerses us in the narrative, making us feel part of what is unfolding. on the screen. The film uses a completely audiovisual cinematographic language for more than telling us the facts, really showing them to us, so that the dialogues, although I think they are quite good, remain in the background of importance, because the main thing is that we can see and feel each scene Therein lies the greatness of this work. All this is complemented by first-class performances, as you would expect from such an all-star cast.
Turning to the plot itself, it is worth mentioning that as an adaptation of the novel this feature film is extremely attached to the original material, so that for those people who are fans of that literature, they will almost certainly be very satisfied with what they get. they will see The film has a very interesting premise, which of course is completely inherited from the text, in which elements of science fiction and fantasy are mixed. Another thing that has a certain degree of peculiarity in this film (in addition to the social division in clans as in medieval times), is that, although it tells us about a distant future and a galactic empire, beyond the ships the technology does not has a very relevant presence, this is due to the fact that robotics and artificial intelligence were prohibited after the Butlerian Jihad, a war between humanity and machines that occurred thousands of years ago, which the film does not mention, nor does it explain ( although it does show) the so-called mentat, people who, due to their abilities, serve as a replacement for computers.
However, I believe that all these virtues mentioned above conspire to generate as a consequence an important problem that affects the possible commercial success of a film like this and that is that, although it is quite an aesthetic spectacle, its narrative is quite heavy and dense. ; not telling directly and quickly the details that surround the argument, makes it unfriendly to the audience that is unaware of the original literary work. The development of the situations is quite slow, there are times when the tension is good and a certain adrenaline is manifested, but they are like islands within a sea of pauses, and the length of the footage is considerably long. As it is the first part of a movie that, if completed, would last 4 or maybe 5 hours, it is impossible not to feel after seeing it that the story is halfway through, that we only saw a long introduction of what will really happen.
Although this film has large-scale action scenes and battles, they are presented to us from a totally alien perspective, unlike the more personal scenes, in the action scenes it is difficult to feel part of the events, as they seem distant and massive. On the other hand, when more individual confrontations occur (with the exception of the last fight scene), we are left with the feeling that another great actor has been wasted by giving him a very short and inconsequential participation, I am referring especially to the role of Duncan Idaho played by Jason Momoa. If we go to the side of the villains, the thing is similar, since they have very little presence on screen and their motivations and their world are briefly developed, it is true that their macabre and repulsive appearance is very well achieved, but I don't know dig into them enough. In the case of Glossu Rabban, the character of Dave Bautista, has very few lines and when he gets to participate in the action, it ends up being something fleeting and without much impact.
Being this a super production with a big budget and related to a huge space conflict, I think it gloats too much in the grandiloquence of its graphics and the aura of solemnity that covers each scene, giving the work a totally dramatic tone and relegating too much the emotion and the epicity of the battles to the background. If someone was excited about a confrontation between Momoa and Batista, they will be very disappointed, likewise, the presence of Zendaya's character is tiny in this first part. The characters that mostly have space in this film are Paul and his mother, they are the ones that most generate empathy and the narrative orbits around their feelings, an aspect in which their interpretations leave no room for complaints, but the development of the The story in general becomes somewhat monotonous, with intermittent flashes of adventure, mainly due to the slow pace and the distant point of view in which the events are shown.
Consequently, as a form of artistic expression it may rise to the status of a masterpiece, but as a product of mass entertainment it may not be as efficient. In fact, I am a little surprised that it has managed to collect around 400 million dollars at the box office, which is enough to support the realization of the second part, but taking into account that the cost of its production was 165 million dollars and it is estimated that the promotion amount amounts to another 135, which adds up to 300 million, it can be seen that the profit margin is only 100 million. Of course, the conditions related to the pandemic that could have affected its collection must be taken into account, but under normal conditions the global numbers for a production of this magnitude should exceed 600 million, to be considered a true success, although the films of Villeneuve are not usually blockbusters, but rather critical successes.
I imagine that Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures have planned that the second part will have a much more dynamic rhythm and that will make it more entertaining, because it will adapt the most exciting part of the book, that added to the fact that the audience will already know much better the bases of the story, then the commercial success could be greater and give rise to a long saga, but otherwise even with all its visual spectacularity, the franchise could collapse for economic reasons by not capturing the general public, which not only looking for excellent aesthetics, but also some adventure. Due to all of the above, my rating for the first part of Dune is 8.5/10.
