Everyone runs with all their might when they are in a hurry, racing toward the dream that moves their hearts before time runs out. Happiness is a race against time, and no one wants to be left behind.

The sun was just beginning to filter through the clouds, and the cold morning air caressed Jerome's skin as he stood on the track with his eyes closed. He proudly wore his athletic tights and had the habit of meditating before undertaking any significant physical effort.

That place was a sanctuary for him, one where he could somewhere hear the cheers and applause that made him happy. After winning his first gold medal, he gained the recognition of millions of people; it was what he considered a taste of the paradise he had dreamed of since childhood. He didn't want to disappoint anyone, especially not himself.

"Now!" shouted his coach.

Jerome opened his eyes and began to run with all his strength; his legs were muscles pumping power, adrenaline raced through his heart, and he completed the lap in record time.

Jerome had always been a natural runner and a very fast one. They called him Lightning for one reason only: he was striking on the racetrack. Since he was young, his life had revolved around sports; every step toward his dreams was swift, and his dedication to training was determination for his ideal—to become a star in Olympic sports. Everything pointed to him having a secure future; he was headed straight for the top.

However, everything came crashing down during a race he would never forget…

In his highly anticipated Olympic competition, as Jerome raced for another victory, something terrible happened, perhaps due to the overwhelming effort of the moment or a misstep at an unfortunate time, but everything he had achieved was thrown away because of a devastating injury to his left leg.

In the midst of the race, he fell to the ground, writhing in pain, while the other participants ignored him and passed by until he was left last, turning him into the tragic great loser.

A lightning strike of misfortune on a clear day, the good fortune that had blessed him betrayed him with a low blow that threw him into an abyss that seemed endless. After falling to the ground injured, he spent long days in the hospital and then months of recovery, and unable to run like before, his world turned gray.

Jerome, the lightning of the track, became immobilized in a wheelchair. He returned home embarrassed and frustrated; he had been an athlete and had become a wounded man, reduced and trapped in a cycle of sadness, his existence becoming a daily struggle in which he found no solace.

The runner who once shone like a star looked melancholically at the gold medal he had earned with such fervor; now hidden behind a wall of hopelessness. He did not want to see anyone, he completely isolated himself at home, watching television to see how his friends and rivals continued their athletic lives while he clung to his glorious days to avoid falling into a severe depression.

The nights were cold and lonely; the sharp pain in his leg faded thanks to the painkillers recommended by his doctor, but Jerome became addicted to them. However, not all his routine was miserable; sometimes, amid the darkness, a friend would visit him to provide emotional support.

It was his old coach, Carlos, a wise man whose passion for sports never faded.

It was during an episode of insomnia that Carlos appeared at the door without calling ahead.

"Jerome, how have you been?" he said with concern.

"Life has hit you where it hurts the most, but you can't let that define who you are. Yes, you've lost, but you still have time to regain your essence and be yourself again" he said firmly on that starless night.

At first, the words of his loyal coach meant nothing because of Jerome's bad mood. However, Carlos's sincere gaze was charged with hope, as if he could see beyond the depression clouding his mind.

It took many visits and numerous encouraging words to get Jerome to take a step in the right direction. One day, a spark finally ignited; a vestige of his former self emerged from the abyss of darkness, ready to rise off the ground, but fear made its presence known.

"What if I fall again?" thought Jerome.

The idea was terrifying, but staying still was to accept being forgotten; risking everything to rise once more was the idea that gave him hope again.

With that purpose in mind, he planned to change his life. He put the painkillers behind him, and despite the pain in his leg, he began jogging along the street every day to regain mobility in an impulsive attempt to reconnect with the runner he had been.

At first, doing cardiovascular exercises was hard; his muscles ached, and his breathing became labored, but little by little, he managed to find his new rhythm on his path to success.

No quería defraudar a nadie, mucho menos a él mismo.
