Since they can remember, Lumi and Sara have shared one of those extraordinary friendships that seemed perfect. Since they were just five years old, they have been inseparable companions. They have moved from building impenetrable forts with living room cushions and sharing lunch to sharing headphones in the back of the school bus.

Over the years, that sweet childhood connection evolved into young teenagers navigating the chaotic and stressful phase of high school.

However, at some unspecified point between laughter, hugs, and deep shared glances, the line of platonic friendship blurred completely into something more.

For Lumi, the exact moment he realized he loved Sara was a warm autumn afternoon. She was wearing a slightly oversized yellow sweater and laughing hysterically at a nonsensical joke he had just told. Seeing her eyes light up made his heart race until he blushed; this new feeling was peculiar, it had nothing to do with brotherhood.

For Sara, the process was much more gradual, like a slow and silent dawn; suddenly, the mere thought of imagining a future without Lumi by her side became emotionally unbearable. It was after a bitter nightmare where he left her for another girl that she understood what she felt.

But fear, as always, is a barrier that involuntarily separates people.

Both, in the solitude of their respective rooms, made the same decision: it was better to remain silent than to expose their feelings. The absolute terror of destroying a decade of trust and ending up heartbroken from unrequited love forced them to wear a mask every day.

They were best friends, awkwardly hiding the biggest secret of their lives for fear of losing each other.
Life continued in that agony of unspoken words until a typical Friday night.

They were all connected on their phones, joking animatedly in a chaotic and cluttered group chat with several friends discussing weekend plans.

Messages poured in: inside jokes, absurd stickers, endless audio messages, and complaints about the week.

Simultaneously to that virtual buzz, Lumi was having a deep conversation in a private chat with his friend, Eddie. A guy he felt really comfortable with, enough to open up emotionally.

Eddie suggested he put his feelings into words to relieve his discomfort: It's a practice of writing a long message and then deleting it to feel relieved.

Lumi had been holding onto a silent frustration for too many months, and that particular night, inspired by a burst of melancholy and impulsivity, he drafted a long and brutally honest message.

"I don't know how much longer I can stand being near Sara pretending we're just friends. Every time she looks at me, I feel like my chest is going to explode. I like her so much it hurts. I'm hopelessly in love with Sara, and I have no idea what to do."

Lumi read the text twice. He sighed deeply, and instantly, a message came in, and without realizing it, he pressed the send button. Not aware of what he had done, he locked his phone screen and lay back on his bed. But the phone vibrated almost instantly.

When he unlocked the screen, Lumi's blood ran cold. The message he had drafted was sent to the group chat. Dazed by the number of notifications and the speed of the conversation, Lumi deleted the message that had been accidentally sent so that Sara wouldn't read it, but his friends saw it, and it was only a matter of time before the news spread throughout the school.

Panic overwhelmed him. Lumi's heart was pounding fiercely. He wanted to throw his phone out the window and considered moving to another city and disappearing. Ten agonizing seconds passed, which felt like an eternity. Then, the screen lit up again; Sara was calling him.

His hands trembled uncontrollably as he swiped to answer.

“Lumi?” Sara's voice sounded on the other end of the line.

“Umm... Sara... I...” he stammered, not knowing what to say.

He wanted to make up a cheap excuse. He wanted to tell her it was a stupid joke, but Lumi was so flustered that he was honest with her.

“Sara, I'm sorry. I texted the wrong chat.”

“You texted the wrong chat?” she repeated with an undeniable tremor in her voice.

“So... what you wrote there wasn't true?” Sara said.

Time seemed to stop. In that fleeting moment, Lumi realized there was no escape or turning back. He had reached the edge of the precipice, and the only option was to take the leap.
He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and let go of the heavy mask he had worn for so long.

Embarrassed and exposed, but with unwavering honesty, he finally spoke:

“I didn't want to tell you this way... but everything I said is true. I'm in love with you. I've liked you for a long time.”

There was only silence on the other end of the line... Lumi squeezed his eyes shut and clenched his left fist tightly, bracing himself for the inevitable rejection; he was not emotionally prepared to lose his best friend. However, what he heard on the phone was a sigh followed by a laugh.

“You're a complete idiot you've made me wait too long,” Sara said playfully.

Lumi's eyes flew open, confusion quickly mixing with hope.

“What do you mean?”

“That I'm also in love with you,” she interrupted cheerfully.

Upon hearing that, a huge smile broke out on the boy's face. The heavy burden of uncertainty had completely disappeared, his shoulders felt lighter, and the warmth in his heart surged with more fervor than ever.

The biggest mistake he had ever made had just transformed into the beginning of a love story.

Me has gustado desde hace mucho tiempo.”
