There is a rule of thumb that applies generally to most groups. It’s called the 80/20 rule. It’s very well understood in the sales field, and less so in the management field, but it still applies. The 80/20 rules says that 20% of your organization will do 80% of the production, sales, or work. In society these 20% are productive people, mostly entrepreneur types. These will be the stars of any workforce.

There's another group of people that exist within every organization that are not talked about so much. I call them “Negative”. These represent a small number of people that are high functioning in some area, but they are characterized by bad attitude and bad habits, such as tardiness, absence, or distractions (ie phone, talking, long breaks). These people will poison your team. Managers should take any oppurtunity to remove these people from their organization.

As an example most food service is managed by former wait staff. Kitchen staff is filling a need so they get selected less often. The best wait staff is frequently making more money than the managers do, so they don’t want such a promotion. Instead restaurants promote from a second tier of those negative employees I was talking about. If you’re around you will hear the complaints about the behavior these promoted managers had, and guess what? Their behavior doesn’t change. It is actually reinforced, after all, they got promoted. Right?

Now if we apply the 80/20 rule to voters, one can see why the 80% have interests that differ from the productive members of the group. Worse they are in opposition to those that produce. Democratic government naturally creates a condition where those who produce are oppressed. Progressive taxation is an example. Taxation is theft, but current laws steal an increasing amount from the productive members of society.

Democracy, over time, will undermine the most productive, and consequently hurts all of the citizens. That is why ultimately, democracy fails.
