Wren
The little wren is among the birds I see, or better to say I hear everyday. You wouldn't believe how loud this small bird is. Unmistakable sound which somehow reminds me of a cricket, shows where the wren is hiding, preferably in shrubs, dry piles of branches and twigs. Since it is small and brown, sometimes is hard to notice.
With its upright tail and round body, the wren is defending its territory fiercely. It may be small in size but has a heart of a lion.
To get an idea of the size of the bird, you can see it in next photo which is uncropped.
It has started to be very, very cold and these images I did at the end of the walk in the park. I was not dressed well as I thought it was going to be warm like the day before. In fact it was sunny when I was out and suddendly the clouds appeared and the cold wind made all the difference. So, I was almost going to miss the wren, although I heard it loud and clear, because I was shivering and thinking to get back home. But how quickly I forgot about the cold when I saw it and stopped for couple of minutes.
Goldcrest
Even if it is smaller than the sparrow, the wren is not the smallest bird though. It weights only 10 grams and body length is 9 - 11 cm, but smaller than that is the goldcrest, who hardly reaches 9 cm in length and weights half than a wren. The goldcrest is the smallest bird in Europe.
The goldcrest is called also a kinglet. Actually it belongs to the kinglet family.
Anyway, this is rather elusive bird and for me a big challenge to photograph. It lives in the mountains and comes in lowlands and city parks in winter. I got a chance to see it once by far this winter. The photos are not good enough as I was chasing it from tree to tree.
I managed to catch the moment of flight, although not as sharp as I wish.
I hope to have more luck next time when I meet the goldcrest. This is my goal to have clear and sharp image of it.
And that's all for now. I will show you more little birds in my next post.
Until then - happy birding!
