Today Tuesday I remember three songs that were a boom in the 80's, a time when my musical tastes were more inclined to rock and heavy metal, of course this did not prevent me from being attracted to other types of musical genres.
These songs are Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode, Situation by Yazoo, and A little respect by Erasure. These songs were played insistently on commercial radio here in Venezuela and the, for their time, incipient music videos of the songs could be seen on music shows.
Believe it or not I always felt a connection with these songs, until I discovered that the co-author and arranger of all these songs was Vince Clarke.
1.- Just Can't Get Enough (Depeche Mode).
Vince Clarke is an English musician, composer, remixer, DJ, and producer known for being one of the precursors of electronic music. He had founded in 1980 a group called The Composition of Sound with Andrew Fletcher, however this band was renamed Depeche Mode shortly after.
By the end of 1981 Depeche Mode was enjoying success thanks to their debut album Speak and Spell, but Clarke (main composer and mastermind of the group), could not stand the fame and success, and even more that the public cared more about the image they offered than the music they made, so he left the band. For the talent shown in the group he was considered a wizard of the keyboards.
Just Can't Get Enough was written for this first album by Clarke, it features a very infectious rhythm that includes keyboards and synthesizers. This song invaded dance floors around the world, and speaks of the insatiable and platonic nature of young love, that any amount of love provided is insufficient and always wants more.
2.- Situation (Yazoo).
Yazoo was born from the union of Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet. Moyet published an offer of services in a magazine in which she requested to be hired as a blues, R&B and soul singer. Vince Clarke contacted her and from there a professional relationship arose that impacted the British music scene.
Yazoo performed synth pop and new wave, with influences from bands like Kraftwerk, as well as blues elements. The emotional and bluesy voice of Alison Moyet and the electronic sound of Vince Clarke, marked a sound that contained references to disco music, but with a synthesized pop.
The group became an icon, influencing the electronic music that emerged in the eighties.
Situation , is an issue in which a person feels their partner is holding them back, asking them to leave them alone and go quietly because they can't handle the pressure. It mentions someone who is in control of their life but is not well liked by others.
Situation, appearing on the album Upstairs at Eric's, released in 1982, is a song composed by Vince Clarke and Alison Moyet.
This group disbanded in 1983 after releasing two albums, the aforementioned Upstairs at Eric's and You and Me Both due to disagreements between its members. Clarke later formed the group The Assembly and then Erasure with Andy Bell). Alison Moyet began her solo career in 1984, releasing her debut album: Alf, named after her nickname from her Punk period.
Turning the page to their disagreements, the duo reunited several times between 2008 and 2011.
3.- A little respect (Erasure).
Erasure, is a British technopop music group formed in 1985 in London by Vince Clarke (keyboards) and Andy Bell (vocals).
In 1984, Clarke placed an ad in the newspaper The Melody Maker requesting a singer, in the auditions he met and created Erasure, in 1985. Their debut album was called Wonderland, the second The Circus, and the third The Innocents, which includes the songs Chains of love, and A little respect.
A little respect, is a song that as a background indicates that we must treat others as we want to be treated ourselves, the song asks for respect and consideration for the loved one.
Beyond the fact that certain homosexual communities have adopted it as an anthem for them, the theme is more universal and can be identified as a song against bullying, racism and discrimination.
In 2005, in the midst of the release of their new album, Nightbird, Bell announced that he was suffering from AIDS. This duo has established a large number of dance anthems and has a very large fan base despite Andy Bell's sexuality being highly questioned.
They have always done what they wanted to do with honesty on stage and in the lyrics of their songs.
Vince Clarke is considered one of the most important precursors of the electronic music of the technopop movement.
