Black Midi is an eclectic musical group that appeared on the London scene in 1999, its members are: Geordie Greep (vocals and guitar), Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin (guitar), Cameron Picton (bass and keyboards) and Morgan Simpson (drums) and in that year they played in North America and even Japan.
Their first album is called Schlagenheim and they recorded it under the sign of improvisation in just five days. The result is elegant with elements of jazz, pop and rock, although very manic, but irresistible to the listener.
We are presented with an audacious proposal where synthesizers, acoustic instruments and rhythm boxes are incorporated.
There are sounds that evoke the group Genesis, especially when Steve Hackett was a member of it, and there are influences of King Crimsom, Talking Heads, Pearl Jam, Yes, Dream Theater and even The Killers or Kings of Leon. There is also a tendency to what they call math rock.
The whole album is remarkable, however the track Western is like listening to Pearl Jam and Yes at the same time, the track starts calm with some soft guitars accompanied by the bass and Geordie Greep's voice suddenly changes to something that we could consider another song. The bass then begins to repeat its sound which serves as a support to later add other instrumentation.
This song is about a wild west duel which is a para ball about the end of a toxic relationship.
In 2021 the band releases their second album Cavalcade experimenting with jazz and post-punk. The music is strange and esoteric, you hear experimentation on another level, the guitars in some songs are evolving along with the drums as King Crimson does. There is bossa nova, punk rock, prog rock. In this opportunity Matt Kwasniewski-Kelvin, member of the original line-up, leaves the group due to mental health problems, but two new members are added: saxophonist Kaidi Akinnibi and keyboardist Seth Evans.
Listening to John L you can notice a curious combination of bands like Primus, and a tendency to No-Wave (a music that does not belong to any style but resembles punk rock), and Jazz. The influence of King Crimson is also undeniable.
It's a furious track, with attractive pauses, that works like a roller coaster. Violins and saxophones contribute to the mayhem, with lyrics about a populist, nationalist ruler whom the masses eventually tear apart.
The third album by the band Hellfire from the year 2022, was written during the confinement by COVID-19, and develops the idea of evil through characters that represent some of the darkest facets of humanity. Small, very cinematic stories are told. Progressive rock, post-punk, math rock, and jazz are superbly combined.
Welcome to Hell through black humor presents the concerns faced by people who have fought in wars. But it conveys a message of finding the inner strength to face difficult times. Sarcasm is used to emphasize the horrific nature of war.
As a bonus I present you the official video of the song, which reminds me a lot of Japanese anime and Adventure Times, although what I observe in images has nothing to do with the music, also the theme sounds somewhat different from the live version.
This is a great band, and these three songs are a sample of what they have been able to achieve, I had a hard time choosing just three songs, look for their albums on Deezer and on Youtube there are a lot of very imaginative videos and great live performances. . This is a group that lovers of progressive rock, jazz and any music lover in general should not stop listening to.
