So today i was on an outreach program where the hospital has some of the specialist workers like myself visit communities without healthcare facilities to render our services to the locals and i came across a situation which is not really my first time however i felt it was a reminder to remind Hivers to get themselves checked.

So what was the particular situation that got me to come around and share this with you all, before i move on to the story time, let me put this across. Guys if you have yet to get your eyes checked, please do so, you do not know what could be hiding from you or the potential danger you may be exposing yourself to in the future.

Story Time

So this 70 year old woman came around to get her eyes checked because first and foremost she had never really checked her eyes before ever since she was born. She was a farmer and and previously she had had some trauma to the left eye and she just decided to wait it out for it to heal or get better on its one but it doesn't seem to improve.

This was her second reason for actually coming around to our grounds to see us, she can't see anymore with her left eye. She actually came in with her eyes closed before she said it disturbs her when she is in the sun and today was particularly sunny in Ghana. So i anesthetized her right eye to make it possible to open and examine.

Now this wasn't what i was expecting when i lifted her life? Her cornea had all turned white, it look very much like she got the eye infected perhaps from the farm incident and the chances that it was a fungal infection which had stayed for too long and spread across the entire cornea was quite obvious. One could even tell there was some amount of pus.

Staining the eye confirmed fungal keratitis however that confirmation of diagnosis wasn't my issue, yes she would never be able to see again with that eye unless perhaps cornea transplant however, my worry was with the fact that when she experienced the trauma she could have made that effort to get her eyes checked instead of wait it out.

I was actually shocked it had go that bad and she still held back because the cornea's sensitivity and pain should have been unbearable at this point. It reminded me of a similar situation where one patient was only but lucky during such a similar case to discover he actually had glaucoma which was advancing which could have meant he would be losing his sight in the very near future.

Conclusion

I guess the point i am trying to put across is that the eye is a beautiful organ and at the same time the window to our daily lives scenery, you could loss all that beauty just because you held back from a simple visit to your Optometrist.
