Hello, anime fans. This time, I’m bringing you the latest list of anime series I decided to put together for this past summer season. That’s right—with this TOP list, we’re wrapping up this little special feature that I usually bring you every quarter. Normally, I focus on talking about anime in popular, well-defined genres, but this time I’m going to make an exception. I’ve also noticed a certain type of anime that aired this past season that really caught my attention, and I wanted to include them in a list like this somehow.

All the anime I’m going to talk about below have a historical element in common—whether because they’ve made history in their respective genres or industries, or simply because their plots are based on past events or historical periods. What you’ll read below is solely my personal opinion. All the anime listed below are rated on a scale of 1 to 10. They’re ranked in my personal order, based on how historically accurate each one is. If you’re looking for something different to watch, this list might just be what you’re looking for.

The Ghost in the Shell

18634.jpg

Let’s start with the most recent animated adaptation of a classic work that made history in the world of manga and anime. And not only that—we could even say it influenced some of the creators behind today’s famous works in the science fiction film industry. It’s a story set in a dystopian future not too far removed from reality, where AI is widely used and technology has reached new heights. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Masamune Shirow, The Ghost in the Shell was produced by the studio Science Saru.

The anime tells the story of an elite combat team called Section 9, led by Mayor Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg with a human brain. In this neo-futuristic world filled with cyborgs in the form of young women and information that is instantly transferred to your brain with just a blink, this division carries out various missions involving search and rescue, espionage, and elimination. Surely all fans of the science fiction genre are familiar with this work, whether through its classic animated adaptations or the original manga.

Many even criticized this modern animated adaptation, produced by the same studio that brought us gems like Dandadan, for example. One thing worth noting about this new adaptation is how it differs from the classic 1990s movie. Instead of giving us a dark, cold, dramatic, and serious tone, this version from Science Saru offers a more comedic, colorful story packed with action and fast-paced scenes. However, the story remains more faithful to the original manga, which is evident just by watching a few episodes.

The pacing, art style, animation, and character design are details that really stand out. If you’re expecting something more “serious,” you’re better off going back to the classic, popular version rather than this more modern one. I’m not saying this because I don’t like it—quite the opposite—but its blend of humor and action overshadows the story’s deeper, more psychological moments. The anime also features a level of fanservice that isn’t excessive, but it does stand out quite a bit. The fluidity and visual details are top-notch—no doubt about it. The same goes for the sound effects and the soundtrack.

Personally, I give it a rating of 8.5/10 in terms of the science fiction, action, and comedy genres.

The World Is Dancing

18634.jpg

From here on out, the anime I’ll be discussing officially fall under the “historic” genre, since each one draws some influence or inspiration from—or is based on—a specific historical period. The anime I’m featuring in this post tells a story set in 14th-century Japan. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Kazuto Mihara, this animated adaptation was produced by studio Cypic. The anime tells the story of Zeami Motokiyo (Oniyasha), who, from a very young age, has shown great talent for classical Japanese dance (Noh).

I’ll be honest with you: I only ended up watching this anime because of its excellent animation. Or at least that’s what caught my attention at first when I watched the first episode as it aired. The story itself didn’t really grab me, since classical dance isn’t really my thing; however, something about that first episode completely hooked me, and I really liked the plot. The idea of a boy who dreams of “changing the world” through dance is interesting—especially when you understand the historical context surrounding the story.

The anime has excellent pacing, dramatic moments, well-developed characters, and visuals that are an absolute audiovisual marvel. Of course, if you’re a fan of classical dance, you might find this anime fascinating, since it portrays it so well. The blend of humor and drama throughout the episodes is excellent, as neither overshadows the other. While there are moments when it’s difficult to grasp all the messages conveyed through the classical dances, this is actually because I struggle to understand certain stories behind those dances.

The animation, as I mentioned above, is one of the most remarkable aspects of this anime due to its high quality, fluidity, and originality. The creative way the animation portrays the dances is fascinating. The camera angles, visual details, color palette, character design, use of light and shadow, and so on. The sound effects also stand out quite well—quite well, I’d say. But nothing compares to the soundtrack, of course. This is the perfect anime for those who want to watch something different.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the drama, dance, and story genres.

A Witch's Life in Mongol

18634.jpg

Next up is another historical, original, and interesting anime that also aired this past summer season. It’s a series that’s hugely underrated because of its animation style and the story it tells. A story brimming with drama, betrayal, pain, and revenge in a world very different from the one we live in today. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Tomato Soup, this animated adaptation was produced by the studio Science Saru. The anime tells the story of Sitara (Fatima), a young orphan who lived in the city of Tus, in the Khwarezmian Empire, in the midst of the Mongol invasion.

It’s no surprise that almost no one has seen this anime, since it went largely unnoticed this season due to its… authentic animation style. Mind you, many may not have liked it, while others might have, but in my case, I admit that I was more fascinated by its plot than by anything else. It’s true that the animation style makes this tragic story of the Mongols a bit more “family-friendly” due to the censorship and the lightheartedness of the scenes. Well, at least at the beginning, where you see more deaths, wars, and so on. Although, of course, it all depends on what you expect to see here.

18634.jpg

The anime doesn’t even begin to reflect the extent of the atrocities committed by the ancient Mongol Empire during Genghis Khan’s reign. In reality, the anime focuses more on what the young Fatima witnessed and experienced during the invasion of Tus and her exile alongside the Mongols. It’s a blend of betrayal, hatred, and unparalleled vengeance. Although the characters are difficult to distinguish visually due to the similar animation style, their character development is quite remarkable. The plot itself features a few interesting twists.

The way the story shifts and evolves—moving from a simple personal vendetta to an act that could alter the course of Central Asian history itself—is fantastic. The animation, on the other hand, has its own appeal, despite its limitations in terms of visual presentation, censorship, and visual detail. The color palette, visual effects, and use of light and shadow align very well with the series’ aesthetic. The sound effects aren’t bad either, but the real standout is the soundtrack.

Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in terms of the drama and story genres.

Sparks of Tomorrow

18634.jpg

We’ve reached the home stretch with another historical anime, but this time it’s blended with a touch of science fiction and comedy in a way that makes it even more entertaining than the previous anime. It’s a story of dreams come true, goals, progress, and obsessions pushed to the limit during an era of unparalleled revolution. Based on the light novel series of the same name written by Hiro Yūki and illustrated by Kazumi Ikeda, this anime adaptation was produced by Kyoto Animation. The anime tells the story of a young couple named Iwako Momokawa and Kihachi Sakamoto, who each have dreams they hope to fulfill.

Looking back on it now, this anime is actually a work that recreates the old era of 20th-Century Japan, but with a touch of science fiction—specifically, steampunk being the most notable subgenre here. I say this because of the aesthetics and design of this alternate version of Japan; however, rather than emulating its illustrious era of electrical technology, this world is dominated by the age of steam-powered industry. However, despite this, we can see a series of “attempts” throughout the episodes that were part of the electrical industry revolution of that era.

Here's the trailer for the anime:

18634.jpg

All of this revolves around our young protagonist, Kihachi Sakamoto, who is also a genius when it comes to electricity and who, from a very young age, has invented things that would make the 20th Century the “age of electricity.” However, after losing his older brother, our protagonist suffers from severe depression, and only one girl—Iwako Momokawa, the daughter of a family of brewers—will help him remember his dreams and work toward achieving them. The anime has its entertaining moments, as well as its dramatic ones. Every character we get to know here stands out in one way or another.

It has a pace that really hooks you, with no bad episodes and a finale that’s quite moving. The animation also delivers, thanks to its art style that blends traditional drawing with backgrounds painted in a very steampunk-inspired style. The shots, the views, the color palette, the visual effects, and more are top-notch. The character designs also look great, as do the anime’s excellent fluidity and level of detail. The sound effects are no slouch either, but nothing compares to its soundtrack.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in terms of the science fiction, drama, comedy, and story genres.

The Elusive Samurai (Season 2)

18634.jpg

To wrap up this TOP list, I couldn't think of a better way to do it than with the return of one of the best historical anime series—packed with comedy, action, and adventure—that I've seen in recent years. A story brimming with drama, betrayal, redemption, and character growth set against the backdrop of a chaotic, war-torn era in ancient Japan. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Yusei Matsui, this animated adaptation was produced by the renowned studio CloverWorks. This second season brings us back to the young Hōjō Tokiyuki, the sole survivor of his clan, who seeks to exact his revenge.

I still remember its fascinating and unforgettable first episode, which made a huge impact on everyone due to its dark and bloody tone—in stark contrast to its animation style and varied, vibrant color palette. Many thought we’d see a beautifully rendered portrayal of ancient Japan at the height of its glory, but the reality was completely different. At least that was the case in the first season, which ended without making much of a splash, aside from a couple of striking moments it did have.

18634.jpg

Here's the trailer for the second season:

Source: Crunchyroll.

18634.jpg

However, in this second season, we see more action and plot twists that are absolutely worth watching. Not only because we see a young protagonist who is more developed, experienced, and determined to redeem himself, but also because of the series of events that unfold in this final season leading up to its grand finale. The anime does an excellent job of giving us characters who manage to capture our attention in one way or another. But the best part is that it makes no distinction between friends and foes, since in both cases we see storylines, religions, and characters unfold that end up stealing the spotlight for a few moments.

Obviously, the animation in this anime plays a major role, especially because of the fascinating way it draws, conveys expressions, frames shots, and presents visually stunning settings. The character design is particularly noteworthy, as are the visual effects and the use of light and shadow. The fluidity and level of detail are top-notch. They rely less on CGI here, which is also excellent. But when it comes to suspenseful scenes, the animation shines like no other. The sound effects aren’t bad either, but nothing compares to the soundtrack.

Personally, I give it a rating of 9.5/10 in terms of the action, comedy, and story genres.
