Along with Jet and other bands from that era, The Strokes also had a major influence on the famous “Garage Rock Revival.” Their nostalgic, well-produced sound ensured their place in history, and below, I’ll share my three favorite songs by them.

Estamos hablando de The Strokes, una banda estadounidense formada en 1998 y que se popularizó a principios de los años 2001 con el lanzamiento de su álbum debut. Junto con Jet y otras bandas de aquella época, The Strokes también ha influido mucho en el famoso “Resurgimiento del Garage Rock”. It’s one of the first singles produced and released by The Strokes and has garnered the most streams thanks to its upbeat rhythm and memorable lyrics.
“Last Nite” is a rather interesting song, since despite its seemingly cheerful and upbeat melody and rhythm, its lyrics are perfect for a breakup song. The lyrics tell the story of a couple who have reached a point where she simply feels depressed whenever she’s with him, while he would rather be alone or walk away than stay with her. Lines like “I keep walking for miles, and see, people, they don’t understand, no girlfriends, they can’t understand” show us the extent of our protagonist’s loneliness and isolation.

Es una canción que ha definido muy bien el sonido y el ritmo que luego escucharemos de parte de The Strokes en años posteriores e incluso en la década actual. Last Nite es el segundo sencillo del álbum debut de la banda llamada Is This It (2001). Es de los primeros sencillos producidos y lanzados por parte de The Strokes y que más reproducciones ha conseguido debido a su ritmo tan movido y su letra tan memorable.
Last Nite es una canción un tanto interesante, ya que a pesar de su melodía y su ritmo aparentemente alegre y movido, tiene una letra perfecta para una canción de desamor. This song quickly gained popularity due to its powerful sound and fast tempo—exactly what you’d expect from a band that blends Indie Rock with Garage Rock in its purest form.
The song tells the story of an argument or a heated conversation between the protagonist and his partner. Otra de las grandes canciones que tiene esta banda y que sacó a principios de los 2000 es la canción que les tengo para este segundo puesto. No es una canción tan conocida como la anterior, pero sí ha conseguido mantenerse con el paso del tiempo debido a su ritmo y su sonido fuerte e inolvidable. Reptilia es el segundo sencillo del segundo álbum de estudio de The Strokes llamada Room on Fire (2003). Esta canción llegó a popularizarse rápidamente debido a su sonido fuerte y ritmo rápido, algo esperado de una banda que mezcla el Indie Rock con el Garage Rock en su estado más puro.

Pero esta canción describe muy bien esa sensación de conflicto, turbulencia y desacuerdo que viven las parejas con su ritmo y su sonido un tanto pesado.
The third and final song I have in store for you today is a single that actually reignited my love for this amazing genre. The funny thing is that it was released around the same time as the previous two songs on this list. While it isn’t as memorable as other songs from that era, that doesn’t take away from the fact that it remains an anthem for an entire generation. “You Only Live Once” is the third single from The Strokes’ third studio album, First Impressions for Earth (2006). The song gained recognition for its rhythm and the powerful message it conveys.
But to truly understand that message, we must first know what the song is about. “You Only Live Once” is about human duality—how society itself becomes divided between those who “think they’re right” and those who “are quiet, but really tense.” It also speaks to people who are “cool on the outside,” but who, deep down, “might feel sad and lost.” But the most interesting part is the chorus that goes, “Sit me down, shut me up, I’ll calm down, and I’ll get along with you,” which makes the song’s main point very clear.
The main point isn’t just the duality or the differences in opinions and thoughts we see in others, but the way we manage to get along with each other. Do we easily let ourselves be swayed by other people’s opinions, misunderstandings, prejudices, and problems? Then we must understand that if we don’t keep quiet, calm down, and make peace, we’ll never get along with anyone. As the song’s title itself says: you only live once. So there’s no need to get upset trying to always be right—just keep quiet and listen before you speak.
La tercera y última canción que les tengo preparada hoy es un sencillo que llegó a revivir mis gustos por este grandioso género en la actualidad. Lo curioso es que es una canción que tiene casi el mismo tiempo de haberse lanzado que las anteriores dos canciones de esta lista. Si bien no es tan memorable como otras canciones de su época, esto no quita que siga siendo un himno para toda una generación. You Only Live Once es el tercer sencillo del tercer álbum de estudio de The Strokes llamado First Impressions for Earth (2006). La canción llegó a ser reconocida debido a su ritmo y el gran mensaje que nos transmite.
Pero para entender bien dicho mensaje debemos de saber de qué habla esta canción primero. You Only Live Once trata de la dualidad humana, de cómo la misma sociedad llega a dividirse entre los que “creen que tienen la razón” y los que “son callados, pero bien tensos”. También nos habla de gente que son "buena onda”, pero que por dentro “tal vez se sienten tristes y equivocados”. Pero lo más interesante es la parte del coro que dice “sit me down, shut me up, I'll calm down, and I'll get along with you”, lo cual nos puede dejar bien claro el punto principal de la canción.
El punto principal no es solo la dualidad o la diferencia de opiniones y pensamientos que vemos en los demás, sino la forma en la que mostros llegamos a llevarnos con cada uno. ¿Nos dejamos llevar fácilmente por las opiniones ajenas, los malentendidos, los prejuicios y los problemas de los demás? Entonces debemos de entender que si no callamos, no nos calmamos y no hacemos las paces, nunca nos llevaremos bien con nadie. Como dice el mismo título de la canción: la vida solo se vive una sola vez. Así que no tenemos por qué molestarnos por buscar tener siempre la razón, solo calla y escucha antes de hablar.
