We’ve been feeling pretty nostalgic these past few weeks, revisiting old Rock bands I used to listen to when I was a teenager. But this time, I’m going to veer a bit more toward the Heavy Metal side with another band that brings back fond memories from the past. The band I’m talking about is none other than System of a Down.
This is an Armenian-American Heavy Metal band that was founded in 1994 and rose to popularity in the early 2000s. Their heavy sound and symbolic lyrics—which often address social and political issues—are what made them one of the most influential acts in the genre at that time. Next, I’ll tell you about the three songs I remember most from this band. Esta es una banda armenio-estadounidense de Heavy Metal que fue fundada en 1994 y que se popularizó a principios de los años 2000. “Chop Suey!” is a song that addresses how society or the people around us treat those who are different, even when they end up dying. The song contains lines that have gone down in history for their profound meanings and multiple interpretations. One example of this is the line “I cry when angels deserve to die,” which can mean both mourning the death of a good person and the death of someone who has been judged and forced to die without any recourse.

That phrase could come to mean what, for me, is a very extravagant way of seeing the world. That part of the wheel mentioned could come to symbolize the very chaos or disorder that “connects” humanity to life. As presumptuous as it may sound, many prefer to live their lives amid the chaos and “disorder” that is repeated so often in this song because they come to enjoy so many “benefits” from it. It’s as the song says: “You, what do you own the world? How do you own disorder, disorder?”, which speaks to the chaotic origin of certain people’s possessions.
Hablemos ahora de otro gran sencillo, de los más famosos y difíciles de olvidar de System of a Down, sobre todo por la forma en la que inicia con ese estilo tan característico de sonar con su batería y guitarra eléctrica. Toxicity es el segundo sencillo del ya mencionado segundo álbum de estudio de la banda que lleva su mismo nombre. Lanzado un año después que el sencillo anterior de esta lista, Toxicity llegó a ser reconocida en su época por su sonido tan variable, ritmos y composiciones bastante elaborados y creativos que representan muy bien el movimiento del Nü-Metal que se escuchaba en aquel entonces.
Toxicity nos habla -de nuevo- de la sociedad y cómo ésta convive en armonía irreversible con la toxicidad y el desorden. Sus letras nos transmiten una visión no muy alejada de la realidad, pero de una forma tan simbólica que llama bastante la atención. Por ejemplo, la frase “looking at life through the eyes of a tire hub” puede que no tenga sentido al principio, a menos que sepas lo que es en realidad un “tire hub”, el cual es la pieza central de la rueda de un vehículo que conecta con el neumático. The song has a very different rhythm from what we’ve heard before—it’s slower, but without losing its heavy sound.
“Lonely Day” obviously speaks to us about loneliness and that cold, depressing feeling one experiences on such a lonely day. The song itself describes that day as “the most lonely day of my life”—a day that “should be banned” or that “shouldn’t exist.” This may signify a feeling of loneliness so intense and depressing that the singer himself describes it as the worst of his life. This song directly describes that feeling of loneliness that we all experience from time to time in our lives—something that surely each of us has gone through at some point.

Para finalizar de la mejor manera posible, toca hablar ahora de la canción que me hizo recordar aún en tiempos modernos a esta grandiosa banda de Rock y Metal de los años 2000. Esta es una de esas canciones que trasciende el tiempo y que más de una generación la ha llevado consigo en sus recuerdos, incluyéndome sin lugar a dudas. Lonely Day es el segundo sencillo del quinto álbum de estudio de System of a Down titulado Hypnotize (2005). La canción posee un ritmo muy diferente al ya escuchado anteriormente, siendo más lento, pero sin dejar atrás su sonido pesado.

Esa compañía puede llegar a variar dependiendo de lo que cada quien desee interpretar, pero dicha compañía debe de ser tan cercana al intérprete como para decir la siguiente frase: “And if you go, I wanna go with you, and if you die, I wanna die with you. Take your hand and walk away”. Un día solitario no obligatoriamente tenemos que vivirlo solos, pero sea que lo vivamos o no en soledad, lo importante es “sobrevivir” a dichos días.
